I wish nintendo releases a cheaper version of switch.
How? It´s simple, just release it without screen, without battery, without joy-cons but with one pro controller.
80% of the reveal trailer is showing switch being a portable system, but I really want just a home system.
Nintendo may release it in the future like they did with the 2DS version of 3DS.
I can see that as a
very real possibility.
1) If someone told me Nintendo would release a 3DS without the charger bundled, I never would have believed it. They did.
2) If someone told me that Nintendo would release a 3DS without the 3D feature, I never would have believed it. They did.
3) If someone told me Sony would release a wifi-less PSP I never would have believed it. They did.
4) If someone told me that Nintendo would release a Wi Mini that finally includes a matte surface but comes with no internet features, I never would have believed it. They did.
Nintendo could call it the
Switch Home and emphasise its non-portable nature (yes, even though the Switch name makes no sense by doing this, by the time they release their cut-down, cheaper Home version the Switch name will be synonomous with home and portable gaming so it will be associated with the console and games rather than the switching action itself). No confusion when buying games. Let's not forget that Nintendo are the kings of saving money. Doing this would save them a heap of money. Imagine no screen & no battery and no portable constraints and connectors to worry about, along with the higher customer returns and support costs such a product brings with it.
Cost Savings combined with Customer Needs plus Competition
Nintendo like saving yen. I would put them in the 'overly-aggressive' cost-savings category. Most of all, I can see many customers just wanting a home console, and a cheaper one too (to me the Switch has a bulky 'out-of-the-ordinary-oh-look-at-that-thing' Virtual Boy vibe to it). If we can combine Nintendo's desire for aggressive cost-savings on hardware and we can see that many users will just want a home console (partly due to the size of the 'portable', among other things) I can see the
Switch Home as an
extremely real possibility in coming years. I don't think it will happen in the early years (it would affect marketing perceptions a bit too much), but I can totally see it happening some years into the product's life.
Hardware-wise, I think Nintendo will face too many constraints and obstacles trying to be both things (ie. a powerful portable and powerful home unit). It is a great selling point for them to be 'different' (I think they have to be), but once that marketing image dies off, they will want to save money & also attack the PS4 and Xbox One with their usual attack:
cheap cost of manufacture which will allow them to be more aggressive with pricing against the Big Two. I'd venture to say this has been in their plans all along. After all, they want a piece of both markets.
