Is there a way to develop an executable that could recognize the Wii U formatted USB drive on PC and install games from there? (Like the Wii Backup Manager thar did it with the .wbfs format).

For sure these games were not installed with the real ticket properly but could be loaded from normal Wii U menu under certain conditions like a RedNAND or IOSUhax.

yes, there's a way to do it.
No, nobody did it yet.

capable developers are probably busy on other projects, one at a time !
I think making hacking easier is the current focus (less tools and safer steps to hack the console), then they will be free to look at any other loading methods.
Unless someone is working on it, but hasn't mention it yet (and that's a good decision to not talk about incomplete or unstarted projects).

What you mentioned is only one way to do it.
second way to do it is making a loader (loadiine) to work with FAT32 or exFAT drives, allowing partitions and a single drive for both Wii and WiiU. And this second way is more requested by users than the first one.

we don't know which one will be worked on first, maybe both will eventually be possible.

There is now a tool to open and edit the USB drive, it has been used for different things so far.
First, it was used to extract content, then it was used to write/edit content and Dimok made a script to automatically replace the Rom.zip inside an installed WiiU NDS channel to install haxchi on 5.5.2 if users had their OTP/SEEPROM when no other hacking method existed for 5.5.2.

There's no way to manage a full game (yet), but there are tools now to open/manage the drive's encrypted content.

you can find all the tools here.
https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/List_of_WiiU_PC_utilities

what you want should be at the bottom of the page:
WFS Dumper
and
WFS USB Block injector

you can't install game or manage the drive content with these tools, they are just dumper and haxchi injector.
but if you are a dev, you could help the project and help eyekey making a fully functionnal read/write tool.
though, that will NOT install games as you'll still need to register the game's key and ticket on the system (on nand) in order to be allowed to launch the manually added channels.

Another thing, it is even possible to create a CFW where any Wii U could read the external USB Storage from any other Wii U?
Making USB Backups and keeping it even if your Wii U bricks and you get another, restoring all your games and saves.

I suppose it should be possible, yes, as long as you provide the key somewhere instead of using it from SEEPROM.
it will NOT allow you to launch installed games, as they will miss the ticket/key stored on NAND ;)

You will be able to list the content, but not launch the installed games.
not very useful.

But it could be possible to make the CFW read attaches USB HDD from any other consoles to backup the content with ftpiiu, or with SaveMii.
you just won't be able to launch the game, but browsing the file should be possible.
Dimok and Fix are not working on CFW for the moment, so I don't know if you should wait for something like this "soon", but it's possible.

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.

So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.

@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)

@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
