Taleweaver's top games of 2014

Well...I've played quite some games this year. In this entry, I'll list my top 20 games (of about 40-50ish). Keep note that I rarely buy at retail price, so these are mostly indie games and/or from a previous year. On the plus side, it means you can pick these up for cheap. :)

Here goes:

20.VVVVVV
A fun platformer with incredible music and a hard-but-fair approach.

19.thomas was alone
Played through this on the PC as well as on tablet. I gotta love those little cubes.

18.gunpoint
Monkey island's humor isn't dead, and this games proves this. The actual game is pretty straightforward and actually a bit TOO easy. But I heard it being described as "what watch_dogs should have been"...and I agree. (though I haven't played the latter) :P

17.mirror's edge
You all know this one. The game is too short and the story is a mess (as is combat), but the freerunning and the atmosphere really make up for that.

16.enemy mind
A sideway-shooter with an actual story? Nice! I also love the mechanic where you have to take over ships the whole time. Kinda sad this is all in an 8-bit approach.

15.shadow warrior
The remake. It's just mindless fun, but it's fun nonetheless.

14.far cry 3
I can see why others think it's a great game. I agree with them. :)

13.dust: an elysian tail
this is the sort of RPG I like: fastpaced, easy to use and pleasant on the eyes. And none of that unskippable cutscène bullshit.

12.brothers: a tale of two sons
At first I thought I was missing a subtitle option, but it was meant to be played like that. Interesting (and moving) story, good mechanics and adorable man-hugging. What else do you want? :P

11.element4l
It's probably best to describe it as a race game. With just four buttons, it's amazing how much leverage you can get out of it in terms of movement. If originality was the only factor, this'd be the first place. :)

10.contraption maker
It's the incredible machine. And it's a wonderful remake in every way. You should be getting it right now!

9.saints row the third
Another "mindless fun" game. But it really stacks up the awesomesauce.

8.super hexaggon
From the maker of VVVVVV. Two buttons, yet one of the hardest games ever. I really like how you can just start and stop playing in a whim. I often just play a couple rounds 'just because'.

7.sleeping dogs
GTA without weapons. I'm wondering whether to get the definitive edition, though it'll be a time sink as well. In any case: I never got bored hunting for every piece on the map.

6.lyne
A freaking puzzle game I picked up for less than a buck (on sale). Simple and elegant, yet sometimes incredibly complex. And way more awesome than how it looks.

5.race the sun
Procedural racing, yeeey! The levels from star fox mixed with an endless open field. A game to relax by.

4.one finger death punch
this is basically reflex training. Just youtube it and judge for yourself. I can just testify it's just as rewarding to play as it is to see.

3.guacamelee: gold edition
Basically metroid with a Mexican theme. Very well crafted.

2.rogue legacy
Time sink number 2. I just KEPT ON PLAYING this damn game, to the point where it wasn't funny anymore. But hey...with everchanging levels AND protagonist, it's like it's a new game every time. Certainly the best roguelike I've ever played.

1.torchlight 2
Ugh...I had to force myself not to play this anymore. I can understand why diablo 2 had such an impact (I think). It's just so rewarding to smash everything into confetti and then loot the incredible fountains of loot even the lowest creatures have.

Shadow Warrior is mighty fun, I'd say it's the most silly fun I've had in a FPS, maybe a game, all year. It's 90% off on Steam right now and it's a budget title for PS4/XB1 (runs at 1080p/60FPS though) for like $20-30.

Sleeping Dogs: DE I've heard is alright but not nearly the upgrade that GTA V is. It has new textures and all the DLC stuff but it's nothing extra really, it just looks better and has DLC and at $60 I think it's a bit overpriced.

I grew bored with FC3 and it kinda killed Ubisoft games for me (except like Rayman). You feel like it's really great and packed with stuff to do but then you realize it's all the same stuff. You have the same five side missions that are reskinned. You invade the forts the same way constantly. Then there's just useless collectibles scattered everywhere.

The upgrade tree was absolute garbage too. You earn enough points that you upgrade everything eventually and it gives no sense of specialization. Like Deus Ex, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, they all require you to choose what your specialty is and stick with it. Like Skyrim you can be into magic or melee weapons or stealth or so on, Deus Ex is probably the most hardline example of sticking to a specialty. In FC3, all your skills upgrade one way or another, so you don't find playthroughs to be any different. You can't do a playthrough as a stealth character, one as a gun nut, it's just the same shit. It killed any enthusiasm I had for FC4.

especially Nintendo because they only ever lower the price of games when they do a greatest hits/platinum hits/players choice re-release

@The Real Jdbye, and the HD collections released for 7th gen consoles too

@SylverReZ I read that non-binary people identify as a blend of male and female. The point is i think i'm a blend of those and thus non binary
