Learning chinese

for a number of reasons I'm trying to learn chinese,

anyhow - there are lots of ups and downs

The tones are especially hard - every word has a different meaning depending on the tone you give it

The tones are numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4

1 is basically you have a sustained high tone - like falsetto
2 is where you inflect the second half of a word - like the last word in a question "you want to go where?"
3 is where you go low and then come back to where you started - so it's like a roller coaster down \_/ then up
4 is like when you say a command, like "go!"

I am using duolingo to learn and I also wanna post silly sentences here

他的猫吃了你的香蕉
ta'de mao chi'le ni'de xiang'jiao
his cat ate your banana

That's all for now :P

I like Chinese; it's got to be my favourite language, since it allows you to speak to manderines. Too bad the conversations are never all that fruitful...

How dare that cat eat my banana. In all seriousness that's really great! You can speak to more people and it's fun. I've been learning Dutch on and off for a while.

I am just wondering if you can use this in a similar way in japanese? Try to learn more or less japanese right now.

了 as per your example is especially hard to explain. it's past tense, but it's not at the same time. if an action will have occurred before another action, you also use like: after I get home, I'll fix the computer.

joke (should be in monty python), but the word facebook if pronounced phonetically means "you must die" in Chinese.

@godreborn i'm pretty sure it called otherwise: face=脸, book=书, so facebook=脸书,which literally means a Book made of Human faces, kinda scary huh xDDDD

@leon315 , that's why I said phonetically. su is death or die the rest means must as grammatically it wedges the verb in between.

@godreborn 书=shu, not su, death=死 which is pronounced ''si'' at 3rd tone, dunno where you get the idea about ''su''

lol...it's been about ten years since I've studied Chinese, so my memory is a little hazy. it was my first major in college with a minor in Japanese.

dear tempers, the easiest way to learn Chinese is study aboard, learn basics then fly to China :)
i knew it's a beautiful country with extraordinary people, they are hard working and wise. I've been trading with China for many years, but i'm also traveled a lot while i was there, without business here in Italy, i would just stay in China and probably marry to a Chinese lady.

I studied abroad in Japan. it would've been my major, but Oklahoma doesn't have Japanese as a major (majors are mandated by the state and voted on). I do remember buying a corn dog there, and it was called American dog. lol
