So my girlfriend bought me a $129 coffee mug...

She got her tax refund of $4,000 and got me the Ember 2 adjustable heat 14oz coffee mug. I'm new to this thing, but of all the ones I've researched on Amazon, I kept coming back to it. It's gonna be weird not microwaving hot water in the mug directly anymore, I'll have to get used to that... But I have high hopes that this thing will be my new best friend.

I spend many hours at my PC, and had a coffee warmer under my mug, but it always timed out after 30 minutes, and sometimes it takes me a few hours to get through a cup of coffee. What's nice is it has a battery in the base of the mug, and when you lift the mug the battery takes over and can heat the mug for about 2 hours without the base.

We ended up buying it from Verizon's website for only $107 after shipping and tax, so we saved some money that way. EMBER GANG, RISE UP! :toot:

@Hanafuda I think most people would rather get money back than get a surprise bill once a year. You are totally right though, $4000 is way too much.

I likely will accidentally microwave it, but hopefully not. I could always use my label maker on my microwave to help me remember.

And she's a pharmacy technician/claims specialist, she makes over $18/hr, with a pending-but-guaranteed raise. We used to claim both her daughter and our old roommate, and then get back like $6,000 and give the roommate $1,000, which is more than she would get back on her own taxes from working part-time as a barista. We helped her out like that for about 3 years in a row.

Yo let people enjoy their stuff.

I’ve learned during my time doing reviews for “overpriced” tech that there’s usually a niche of people that would kill to have a given product that makes their life easier...even if it comes at a high cost. You have to see things from a perspective of someone who would want the item, and then judge if it’s good or not, at least in a lot of cases. Sometimes stuff is just priced too dang high to be of value to anyone.

Which, like holy flapjacks that’s an expensive coffee cup. But heck yeah dude! If it makes you happy then rock the heck on! It’s doing it’s job.

I’ve been eyeing that Ember^2 mug for a while. I really like tea, but I’m a slow drinker. I’ve very slowly been getting into “coffee” aka 99% milk, 1% Torani syrup, and 0.00001% caramel flavored coffee too.

I’m a cheapo though, so I went with an Arctic mug that absolutely doesn’t keep my drink even remotely warm. ...coulda been $30 towards the Ember mug. So hey, ho, it’s worth investing in something to bring you joy and not annoyance.

@The Real Jdbye yeah it took me many years to get my wife to go along with me on this, and she still gets jealous when her friends and co-workers get their tax returns every year. (Which they almost all spend irresponsibly lol, like it was a gift from the heavens.) Then I show her what our paychecks would be, if she wanted to get the same as her friends. Discussion ends.

We have plenty enough in savings to deal with the 'surprise bill.' (It's not really a surprise)

And @Jayro, try the Irish Breakfast sometime. Zing!

Yeah you know the comment from earlier that got everyone ruffled about putting money into a 401k or other prudent investment ... they're not wrong. But life has to be lived in here and now, too. Could find out ya have cancer tomorrow, that's just what life is. Save money yeah, but buy some toys too, and enjoy them. Lesson not just karate only. Lesson for whole life. Whole life have a balance, everything be better.

I do use and abuse my label maker a lot, lol. I label all my router ports, my Raspberry Pi 4's with how much RAM they have, I label my SSDs with their storage size if the print is too small, I label my USB ports' generation if they aren't clearly marked, I label my power bricks (Power adapters? Wall warts?), I label my chest of drawers containing my computer parts and Gameboy stuff, etc. My label maker gets a workout, believe me!
