Modding a Xbox in 2021

Some of you know I had my old original Xbox die on me a couple weeks ago super disappointed, I had just gotten a nice set of Logitech Xbox controllers green opacity ones, great deal also $40 for the pair, then I purchased an HDMI upscaler to work on my modern TV. The process was a bit more annoying then I could remember it being newer hardware is sometimes tricker with older stuff in the pc realm.

Anyway I had a memory card laying around with Sid5 loaded on it, found my old copy of splinter cell and a original Xbox for like $30 on Mercari (I believe is the name of the buyers app.) Anyway I got to load everything together and come to find out it was missing the installer.

So asking around I learned there was a method to use the original Xbox to female cable. Ordered one of those and without thinking about it I didn't realize memory card support was iffy when it came to this sort of stuff. So all of my memory cards were either too large or wasn't recognized.

After doing more research I came across a way of figuring it out. If you have a psp and a 4GB or lower offical memory card the Xbox will actually recognized it and you'll be able to plug the PSPs usb port into the original Xbox to format the memory card to FatX. Just be sure you have a good working PSP usb cable. I was bummed a little bit that it wasn't reading it as first and thought last second to change it to another usb cable and then magically it worked. The Xbox formatted it quickly and then I was able to load up Xplorer360 and go from there.

So it really was as easy as just transferring two files from the Sid5 installer by selecting the usb installer from the UDATA file and copying them over to the memory card on the psp. Then all you need to do is copy files onto the xboxs hard drive load your exploitable game and bobs your uncle you got a soft modded Xbox.

Now all I need to do is wait on a larger drive to come in and run xboxhdm to usb.

Make sure to get an 80 wire 3-head IDE ribbon cable, (if you don't have one already) for your new HDD/SSD to give enough speed when game data is streamed to the Xbox.

@kenenthk Yea, not worth it, it wouldn't benefit you much. There are some folks however who'll stick SSDs into everything..

    I just recently picked up a n64 from a garage sell, and looking to mod it and add a HDMI port to it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3548173115...044&customid=4f3038da73b61afddf7e5e90f4153856

    I'd like to find a power strip and HDMI selector built in 1 unit, so I can select which game system I want, and will switch to that hdmi, and power on that plug/power supply only, so don't have all game systems powered all the time, but can't find anything like. May just have to make something myself.

    @Xdqwerty, Nice. Which operating system are you installing?
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    @SylverReZ, windows 10 and some linux distro like linux mint

    dualbooth
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Xdqwerty, Yeah, I'd recommend having another OS just in-case you want to play games.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    At least Linux doesn't contain spyware than what Windows has.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    @SylverReZ, cuz of lag?
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Xdqwerty, No. Whenever you use the internet on Windows, Microsoft collects personal data and installs bloatware that isn't necessarily needed, such as Edge.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    Speaking of which

    @SylverReZ,
    I recall @impeeza mentioned some trick about not having bloatware when installing windows where you set up your country to "world" or smh like that

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    Yes, you can debloat the operating system, but in some cases for me it just reinstalls them.

    @Xdqwerty yes, when you are installing Windows on the first steps you are asked for your current location, you MUST to select «international» so no bloatware is installed, because the bloatware is location based. if this night I have some time I will setup a VM and take screenshots.
