Painful data restoration (fiction/story 3)

[Continuation of [Got away] and [On the run]
Same disclaimers as last times: Writing stories in English is a huge challenge and effort for me. I’m not satisfied with it but still wanted to upload it. I guess almost nobody is gonna read it anyway.Keep in mind: THIS IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY! I don’t condone violence in real life.]

The watchdogs gave up searching pretty fast. “Stop searching that boy!” shouted one. “He will get caught soon enough. We have more important stuff to do.” – followed by dirty laughter.

Then I was alone with the boy, whose mother would soon undergo the worst hours of her young life, in the hideout. He woke up some minutes later and moaned holding his head. It was dark in this hidden cave; he stood up and tried to walk towards the bit of light that he could see.
“You shouldn’t go out before we talked.” I said clinical. This left him startled and with trembling voice he asked: “W-Who’s t-there??” I turned on the screen of his pocket computer to light the cave a bit. “Hey! That’s mine!” he screamed after seeing the background picture on the screen forgetting his fear. “You’re a thief! And… Ouch my head! You… You punched me… you, you…you dirty thief! Give me back my computer!”
Didn’t he have any other problems than his computer in that moment? If he didn’t stop the noise we could be easily found. Leaving that boy behind was not an option. We had to get moving before a big number of watchdogs started searching the area systematically. I told him he to call me Anis and that there was no time to lose – and that I’d have to punch him again if he wouldn’t stay quiet.

“Great! Escaped all the pursuers just to get punched and robbed by a dirty she-devil dressed like a man!” he shouted angrily. His anger grew. Time to get his attention – and hopefully his trust – by shocking him a bit: “Listen up, boy. I’m not a thief. Not really. And certainly not voluntarily. Yes, I would have stolen from your family’s house since it was only stealing from the government at this point. But since you ran off aimlessly, not standing a chance against the watchdogs, I lent you a hand. Admittedly I punched you right into the face. But I did NOT enjoy doing so. If I hadn’t hidden you here, the watchdogs would have caught you two minutes later and you would already now be in an internment camp waiting for your operation.”

Of course his next question was: "What operation?"

I shook my head and answered: “The camps are mixed… and the last thing they need are… pregnancies. Deduct it. Not hard to grasp, or is it?” I answered without any emotion.
“WHAT!?” he squeaked in panic, “Is this supposed to be a joke?”
“Nelly will explain that to you once she is up and running again. I will need your help. And you will need mine… unless you want to visit the camp. Enough talk. Let’s get moving!”
I pulled him out of the cave and forced him to walk about 35 kilometers without giving him a single break. Not having Nelly meant falling back to well-known, not monitored routes; they are not the shortest possible routes. In the middle of a large forest, there was a small cabin where I hid some water and food and more stuff. The boy, let’s call him Adrian, desperately wanted to sleep. I couldn’t allow this yet. Not having Nelly restored as soon as possible was dangerous. On the long way we didn’t talk much.

“Now Adrian listen up.” I started while he was looking at the blisters on his feet, “I told you about my AI system Nelly. We can’t possibly stay alive and free without her. I will give you a leap of faith, Adrian: The backup storage media with the source and binaries are inside my flesh – in my left upper arm and my right leg. You can feel the small containers protecting the memory cards by pushing hard against my skin here and here.” While saying this I threw away my bum-disguise. Standing in front of him in underwear I handed him a lot of stuff: Some pure ethanol, a scalpel, a needle with yarn and some strong cord. Then I told him to tie me up, cut the memory cards out of me and sew me together afterwards.
He protested, called me mad and said he would never, ever cut a living human being into the flesh – especially when not having any kind of anesthetics. “Think again, Adrian.” I said and smiled sincerely. “You can cut into me, making some insignificant flesh wounds, which will heal, and get Nelly’s program this way. Or you can wait till they catch us. They have not inhibitions. They will cut – and they don’t use anesthetics as well. And it will never heal.
The operation on me hurt badly. After all he was a young teenager, not a trained surgeon knowing what to do and how to do it. After roughly twenty minutes of clumsily swinging the knife he had successfully retrieved both small boxes, covered with a lot of blood. A really painful data restoration. To my surprise Adrian was pretty good at stitching up wounds. It took him little time, it didn’t hurt much and it looked pretty good. A little embarrassed he told me that he was used to sewing and repaired clothes at home. Good to know… I’m missing this ability myself.

Time to restore Nelly! Then continue walking towards…

You know how the story if going to end, Alex. The story of Anis, and the story of reality.
Anis has given up in the fictional universe – I've given up this world.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
For a kids aspect Anbernic would be the better option they'd probably melt over the price on a good 4k display
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
For that texasroo guy, I'd recommend the Spell and speak as his first system.
    +1
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
So they buy a pi5 kit for about $150 and say a 28" 4k display probably looking around $400 total
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They'll be getting in the territory of portable Pcs anyway
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again you get what you pay for, its like buying a S series for $300 but its only 1440p native, if you want true 4k, gotta get the X model for $500. But yea you right, when moms buying it anyways, you gotta stay cheap.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They could use HD out on their TV no real need for a monitor these days tbh the purists will disagree
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I'm kind of phasing out on the need for wanting all these consoles cool to have but they just become dust build ups
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I here ya there, I have too many myself, and have hard time letting them go, since most of mine I've modded at some point. Anymore I just play Switch on the go, seriesx at home.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I'm designing my own entertainment cabinet for my man cave, to store all my systems, then I'm also designing a power supply/HDMI switcher so I can switch to whichever system I want, and power it also. Already picked up the cabinet board, but tinkering with my drawings before start
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
But yea, I have frogger arcade cabinet that I gutted and put a Pi4 then Pi5 into, but it never gets played much anymore, should sell it. Even when the kids come over, they don't want to play on it, just the xbox. TMNT and Simpson's arcade is still so fun on it, esp w 2 players.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Gonna check out the new Garfield looks like garbage
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
