Turning my Nintendo DS into an iQue DS

China has some silly rule against game consoles, so Nintendo created iQue, which is just an alias used to legally import their consoles to China. These are very rare and everything on them is region locked.

Recently I've been obsessed with the iQue DSes. It all started during a discussion with my friend @ufo. He was wanting to install iQue firmware on a non-iQue unit, but it wouldn't work. I took a look and noticed that the iQue firmware was 512kb as opposed to the regular 256kb size for other firmwares.
@ufo said, "it would be cool to get ique to work on the 256 ones", and that got me thinking...

The 256kb chip on the DS WiFi card that holds the firmware is the exact same as the 256kb save chip on most DS games. You can swap a firmware and save chip around and everything works perfectly- assuming you correctly flashed the firmware to the now-firmware chip.
The same likely goes for the iQue, but instead it would just be a 512kb chip that's commonly found in DS games.
The iQue also shares all the same hardware with a normal DS, so what if the WiFi boards were the exact same minus the chip capacities?

I decided to start ripping apart a couple shovelware games with 512kb save files in order to identify the chips. This was all so that me and another guy could try making iQue WiFi cards without the guilt of destroying good cartridges. Sadly the chips were privately made and none of us could find the actual part. I figured I'd just go with the cartridges I already disassembled and moved on.

Quickly though I realized I made a huge mistake. I had misread the save chips, and all that shovelware was 512 bytes! My only carts with 512kb save chips were my beloved Pokemon games... I couldn't pop one open, could I?

Eh, what the hell. I can put it back together later. I flashed the iQue firmware with gm9i and gently opened the cartridge. I made sure I was real careful to cleanly remove the chip so I could put it back later. I was afraid I'd remove a pad on the cartridge but a bit of flux got it off nicely.

Next was the WiFi card. The WiFi card gave me a bit of trouble with a small capacitor right beside the chip. I was afraid to break that and ended up marking up the board pretty good. At least it and the chip were intact!

1675656865498.png

Now it was time to put Pokemon's save chip into the WiFi board. Boy, was that hard. My shaky hands kept moving the chip, and in the end it was slightly offset. Thankfully there wasn't any bridging. I decided to put it in the DS lite.
1675656997779.png

I eagerly put it in, turned on the power, and... nothing. Black screens. This meant it couldn't read the firmware. I figured maybe I put the chip on backwards. I moved it around and somehow made it look worse. It was no longer offset, but it was very... crusty. As long as it works I'm happy though.
1675657047543.png

This time I stuck it in and hit the power. It felt like more than a few seconds before the screens lit up. iQue DS, my console said. I had done it. I had just turned my north american console into an iQue one!

I'm happy to have done this. I've never been first in anything, so to be the first one to (publicly) make an iQue console from a normal one, I felt proud. I did it.

Hopefully this was mildly interesting. I might make proper guide along with the necessary info on chips/games with good chips to create your own iQue WiFi card. Let me know down below if that's of any interest to you. See y'all later!

(also I promise I'll put the chip back in my Pokemon game)

Interesting twist and like to see salvaged/repurposed chips from similar fields (we see it in Apple stuff occasionally where charge packs/cases have charge chips that are not sold and blow up a lot). Not sure if there is much practical purpose (ique has about 5 titles, all of which were cracked long ago to work on anything, and a few demos, and pictochat having Chinese symbols you don't have to draw yourself being the main perks) but this so very easily falls under "because I can".
Courtesy of http://www.advanscene.com/html/index.php (click advanced search, click nds, select save type, Flash - 4 Mbit in the search, I obviously don't know if the larger save sizes are pin/protocol compatible but it might also be an option). Quick scan says a few bits of shovelware in there, some of which may have sold enough to dodge completionist types pumping up prices, and possibly some foreign lands stuff as well if it is. I would however expect some chip seller to sell such a thing somewhere -- I very much doubt Nintendo did anything fun with encryption or custom stuff here.

Going to have to quote myself and counter my own lack of imagination. I suppose it could also be a way to have a bit of fun with custom firmwares, especially if we can get the storage up higher still -- couple of months back there was a discussion on custom DS firmwares being had where it was noted cheats were an option in one of them ( https://fwnitro.caitsith2.net/ for a better example) but the firmware chip itself is way too small for even a modest database (though some game specific stuff is an option). Few hundred kilobytes, possibly even a megabyte or two, with some compression (names could be tricky, but ultimately how many are infinite money, infinite health, inventory hack type affairs a substitution in the decoder could handle) and you have someone's walking around collection and possibly even the no sports games, English only plus playable without and hacks type collection if you are good.

Forgot to also mention/check and seems
http://problemkaputt.de/gbatek.htm#dsfirmwareserialflashmemory
has a bunch of chip names and some more on protocols.

@FAST6191 thanks, I've looked over the list of carts you sent and it seems like some of them are easy to obtain. I also think I've got a compatible chip model: M25PE40. Might be something for me to look into later...

@banjo2 I'm sorry, but there are a couple people ready to rip my throat out. Pay me enough to get some bodyguards to protect me and I'll consider.

@KleinesSinchen I was careful and managed to open it where very little of the plastic came apart. I can close it back together and it looks perfectly fine.
The game is Pokemon white, so while being an overpriced Pokemon game, it isn't uncommon. I'll use FAST6191's list and try buying some shovelware for next time.

Amazing work! I am happy for you that this project succeeded, and that you managed to be the first in such a thing. Some day, I'd like to make one such hardware achievement in this scene as well. So far, I think my only such achievement was being the first to get Custom Music working in AC:NH. I'd be interested to read the guide as well, who knows, maybe at some point I'll attempt doing this myself too, to one of the consoles in my still-growing collection. Best wishes to you for the future, I'm really proud of you for how quickly you're getting into and mastering these new fields. Take that from me, your friend who knew you just as the Commodore fan person, when I was already repairing (3)DS systems and lots of other hardware for some years.

@IC_ thanks! I've always looked up to you and KleinesSinchen, so it makes me really happy to get nice comments like that. To me you're all super geniuses lol

I'm honestly surprised though that I've done anything worth even a like. I used to be- and sometimes still am- the kid who gets memory pit a DSi and calls themself a genius hacker for it, while never contributing anything. For a good while I was the village idiot who went around spewing random nonsense. Goodness knows how I got past that. Either way, I'm thankful to have learned all these cool things.

Now that's really cool. Also I feel your pain with the shaky hands. When I built my pc for the first time I probably spent 3 hours straight trying to put the front panel cables (Yknow, stuff like the power button, reset,LED's, the works) and they were so freaking SMALLKFKFK. Just thinking about it makes me have an aneyrism.

I'm so pumped, NCAA football video game is back after a 10 year hiatus, coming to SeriesS/X, PS5 in July.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Wish they would let us play the NCAA football 14 on newer xbox, its one of the only games I love and own on disc still, that is not back compatible, bs.

@BigOnYa My dad recently bought a spare Series X off of me, got game pass, and saw Madden '24 on Game Pass, decided to try it out.

...He was a bit taken aback by the 60GB download size. Poor guy's still living in the 90s!

@K3Nv2 He was looking into consoles for his house anyway (for my younger siblings and himself) and I had a spare XSX and Switch I ended up selling him at pretty steep cuts. I would just give them to him, but I did buy them with the intent to sell them... and college is super expensive.
