The two Zelda games are awesome (and overly expensive by now as anybody might guess).

Have to confess: When I got the notification about your new blog entry talking about a block of cheese, my first thought was: "Block of cheese!? What cliché Dutch stuff is he going to pull off here?" (Please don't get mad at me).

Either way it's nice to finally have one for a good price.

I behaved idiotic, but from the perspective of today the price was/is more than awesome.

Once upon a time LittleSinchen went to a big, big flea market. Between all the rubbish and useless and half broken household goods there was a Game Boy Color. It seemed to be in good condition. Always interested in getting additional spare consoles, Sinchen looked at the GBC. The seller stepped towards Sinchen and told her:

"It is broken. Won't start the game."

With these words he pushed to power switch. "Pling!" the GBC said – showing no Nintendo logo below the Game Boy logo. Scratching her head, Sinchen mumbled:

"That is strange. Looking good. They rarely break."

Then Sinchen flipped the GBC around and almost dropped it. They guy had inserted the game cartridge backwards (label facing to the inside instead of from the GBC away). Instead of keeping quite, Sinchen opened her big stupid mouth and shouted:

"How is it supposed to work when you force the game in the wrong way!?!?"

The seller took the GBC from Sinchen and started pulling on the stuck game cartridge. Nothing happened. After flexing his muscles a bit he finally succeeded in pulling out the game and handed both parts to Sinchen. She put it the game normally and pushed the power switch. "Pling!" the GBC said. And started playing the game.

Moral of the story? Keep your mouth shut for a cheap GBC. The seller increased the price for the now working Game Boy Color with game and batteries to whopping 8€.

No damage on that Game Boy visible. The games still don't fit in the wrong way – despite one has been in. I guess he must have hammered the thing into the slot.

It's just something that popped up in my head since this thing is so yellow, I did not realize the dutch cheese cliche....I don't even really like cheese! :rofl2:

Except on Pizza, Big Mac and something we call "kapsalon" (Literally it means "barbershop" and is a long story. It's basically fries with meet on top, then cheese, and for most people lattice and garlic sauce. But Like it better without the green stuff and with Mayonnaise! The meat is usually doner, shoarma or chicken)

And no I'm not mad, just the opposite since I was laughing out loud! :rofl2:

I was hoping they were good, and yes they are and were expensive even when I bought them a year or two ago. The graphics will take some getting used to though as i mostly played Link to the past and now recently minishcap. I am first finishing Minishcap before starting on these two though, and maybe look into replacing the batteries just to be sure.

Not only that....how on earth did someone manage to even get a game inserted backwards!!! maybe I am just to carefull but I could not get it to go in....that takes a lot of force!

That was a nice story of how you got that GBC super cheap!, and a much better price than I paid!

It's really too bad how expensive retro games are becoming. I was watching youtube video's about game grading and things like that. Besides not understanding why the hell you keep a game sealed in its package and wrapping for nearly 30 years or longer....that dude had a mario bros 3 for the NES in "sealed good condition" and had it graded. Came back in an acrylic box with the grading details on top. The "value" of this thing was around $ 20.000!!!!! I mean....WHY??? What kind of person would even buy something like this at that price????

I've played the Oracle games, via emulation, a little while ago, and...eh. They're fine enough games, but Link's Awakening DX is better-designed.
The Goron and Subrosian dancing minigames can go suck it, for one, having horrendous controls and strict timing. That one multi-faced Thwomp boss is a luck-based pain, as his face rotates (showing different emotions) and he can only be harmed by throwing a bomb onto his head when a specific expression is shown - and his rotating speed increases with damage taken; ugh. Mermaid Suit also has terrible controls.

If an Oracle remake ever happens, I hope to the Triforce these issues are rectified - there are cheat codes to help with that boss and the Goron dancing, and a patch to fix the Mermaid Suit controls, but the Subrosian dancing...save states are the only current solution.

Super Mario Land is inarguably quite simplistic and short, but I definitely like it - as for the other games, SMB Deluxe, Rayman, Conker? Never did play those, myself, so I can't say anything about them.

Still, I too thought this was about dairy products until I clicked on it - clickbait???
And for the GBC itself, it definitely has a quaint nostalgia factor to it, even when you weren't around for its heyday; its low-tech nature just screams 'whimsical' and 'childhood', to me.

SRAM batteries last decades. Still the original ones in Zelda I and II.
You will, however, run into trouble with clock batteries (Pokemon gen 2/3, Harvest Moon)

Can't say any of that. I have a feeling for rhythm comparable to the one a tree stump has… and still passed those dance mini games in a few minutes (don't have a cheat device – played both on real GBC and Game Boy Player). It is not that this covers a whole portion of the game. Don't remember any specific problems with controls in water (but it has been a few years).
More problematic – at least for me – is the luck based nature of the 100% completion (rings). Also: At least a bit more challenge. Out-of-place Capcom dragon in Seasons actually requires some concentration – at least if playing Seasons before Ages.
The two games are larger than Awakening with Ages having a lot of interesting puzzles and Seasons featuring a lot of nostalgia to the first Zelda NES game.

SMB Deluxe suffers from the greatly reduced resolution/field of view. Other than that it is a good SMB1 implementation with a few extras. Rayman… I foolishly sold it decades ago because of the bad sound/music compared to Rayman 1 on PS1. Well made GBC game imho. Conker's Pocket Tales is rubbish. Sold that as well. Anybody thinking of Conker's Bad Fur Day can think again.
