Xbox360, turning me into a Achivement Whore?

As some may know, I got a Xbox360 a few weeks ago. I'm pretty content in games, since I have little money to buy them right now. But after signing up on XBL and getting my first achievement in Halo 3, I realized something, these quick little instant gratification things are so awesome. I spent a good deal getting all the achievements I could get offline up to the campaign part I was on, then stopped since it actually put physical strain on my body sitting there for hours trying to get that 10G for running through a level to get something. Just today I got my some Geometry Wars 2, and hell, 10 hours later, I'm still trying to get the 20 achievements. Spent 3 alone attempting to get the one where you have the run through 30 things in King mode.

It's like a OCD to get those little points to get the great "high" of finally getting it, however short-lived it is. Hearing the "bee bloop" to show me one and I get excited and then screw up to end whatever I'm doing to move to the next. Hell, I feel like I got Tourettes from all the times I cussed when I failed. XD

So, has this happen to anyone? Thoughts and comments are welcome.

I do love the achievements. And I do always look at all the achievements of a game and try to get the ones I think I can get. I also find myself buying the 360 version of some games instead of pirating them for the Wii or PSP just because the 360 version has achievements.

For me, the achievements make the games last longer. I remember back on the NES and SNES, and even some on the N64, I would play the games over and over and over trying to get every unlockable or beat every extra level/boss that I could. But then when I started pirating, I would find myself moving through games too fast. Beat one game's main boss, move on to the next. But the achievements on the 360 games get me to sit down and get in to them more and give them replay value. Especially since I pay for the 360 games too, I guess I want to get the most out of them.

Achievements are nice and yes they do add to replay, but I don't let them take over the main content.

I've gone through achievement bursts, where i've gained a heap in a short period, and then other times hardly notice achievements in games for months lol.

They are a great thing, and add a great amount of replay value to a game if they're done right. (Some games do them horribly wrong, one game even having 5 levels, with 200 achievement points per level completion for its 1000 lol)

I'm playing GRID atm, after skipping it upon release, and it's got a great set of gradual achievements, with some of the hardest ones requiring a good amount of time and effort to get. DiRT also had some great ones, so that's not surprising i guess.

I also gained 1000 in Halo 3, which was a great one to earn, involving plenty of single player, heaps of co-op and multi to get it all sorted.

Achievements on Battlefield 2 (on PC) have sorta gotten me addicted... the only thing stopping me is school. Otherwise I'd be just like all the other freaks on the server I usually play on, where I'd play at least 2 hours a day...

Edit: WOAH! I just realised you joined GBATemp one day before I did! Yet you've got 3 times as many posts as me...

I don't really like achievements , if I get them while playing then so be it , but I don't go for them. In some games it just seems like developers throw some in as a cheap way to add replay value to games. I think if a games worth replaying it should be because it's good and worth replaying , not just to get some random little pop up saying you done X thing.

Also don't like the way they are used as a money making scheme by adding online achievements to try and get more people signed up to gold.

As someone said earlier, if they seem plausable (Like every single one in Soulcalibur 4, luckly.) then I'll shoot for them, but if they're insane/impossible like Final Fantasy XI's Get All Jobs to Level Cap then I won't even glance at it.
*Yes I know the example given is a drastic overexageration as that game was never meant for achievements anyway but I threw it in anyway.

I am most deffinately an acheivment whore.....I had Lego Indiana Jones rented from a local blockbuster and had it out for about a month just trying to complete all the achievements. It ate up a lot of my free time. still working on the Achievements for GTAIV and Dead Rising, and some of them are extremely difficult to pull off (Frank the Pimp for example in Dead Rising has you escort 8 FEMALE only survivors at the one time.) I feel that they add a little replay value to a game but I don't keep playing a game I don't like just to get the achievements. I will go after the achievements in games that really grab me only.

Achievement Whore FTW... got my 360 last summer with Godfather and Pro Evolution Soccer 6... only had the silly 1 left in Godfather.. 20000 Achievement points later money has been a big issue for not getting loads of points but Achievements can even make a shitty game rather interesting.. its the fact its called ACHIEVEMENT which grabs me... i unlocked this for being so good damn good (ok maybe every1 can unlock it with a bit of patience but the personal glory gratifies me) so as every1 says i am a achievement whore but... well there is no but its just a classic system for those video game geeks out there (points to self)

(Currently playing Alone In The Dark 1st time through and loving it)

I'm an achievement whore as well, sadly. I own my X360 for 8 months now, and I'm already at 8200+ points. If it's a game where the achievements are doable, you'll see me obtaining them like mad. However, if they require a lot of hours just for one achievement, I'll simply skip it.

So, it's not bad to become an achievement whore, just don't take it too far. :P

I agree, you could have fun playing multiplayer with friends or be an "achievement whore" and spend hours trying to get one achievement, I know which i'd do.

I used to go nuts over achievements when I first bought my 360. On the first month I think I nailed a few thousand gamerscore.

After I hit 10,000 GS, I'm like "whatever" and started skipping silly achievements that don't add anything to gameplay.

I have just over 16k, and I have 8 games that I got 1000/1000. But that's just my style - collecting everything maxing out everything and stuff.

I clocked over 100 hours on roughly a third of my PS3 games, lack of achievements doesn't stop me from 100%ing a game (regardless of genre).

Quite frequently achievements add replay value or new gameplay. Like, "beat the game using only 1 weapon" of Ninja Gaiden 2 isn't something everybody would do. Or "beat the level without dying" that can be easily found in action adventure / platformer games. There are also "collect everything" kinda achievements which I love. But those are the ones that give me white hair too =P
"Oh crap I've been playing for 50 hours and I just found out I missed a missable item 20 hours worth of progress before" kinda thing. Thank god for new game+.

Maybe a bit of one, i went through all 1250 points on oblivion got most of the ones in dead rising. I stop at the impossible ones. theres no sense in wasting hours on 100 points. sure its bragging rights but does it really do anything else? My nickname for it is the Lamerscore
