Guild Experiences: Windows 8

So yeah, I bought a new laptop and I got it in yesterday. I'm typing on it right now actually!

I decided in a laptop over a desktop because I need the portability for school and I do find that my friends and I all end up playing our PC games in the same room through LAN. It's just easier and it'll run games from the past few years. Like it does New Vegas on high settings, it won't do anything super intensive but it'll do what I want for it.

Anyway, it comes with Windows 8, which I didn't touch until now.

It's... eh?

Like I don't really get it, it's not horrible it's just not as ergonomic. Like I don't use any of the features and I find myself using the desktop versions of apps over the Windows 8 versions of apps. Like the dedicated Skype app is just not as good as the regular Skype app, plus I usually use Skype to either text chat with people while I'm doing other things on the computer or voice chat for a game. So the Windows app is kinda useless.

The Start menu is just less organized and harder to find things. I'm just not big on it. It seems very touch-focused but this laptop doesn't have a touchscreen. So...

Like it's not unworkable but it just seems counterproductive.

As for the laptop, it's light, it's pretty ergonomic but the touchpad is a bit too rough feeling for me. It's got this matte on it instead of a glass and the left and right clicks are too small.

I'm glad with the purchase though, this should keep me happy for a while.

awesome, going portable is a must for students.

* happy to hear it can handle the games you want to play *

hmm...i haven't tried out Windows 8 yet.

anyhow, congrats on your new purchase and maybe i will catch you on steam sometime ?

Windows 8 does grow on you before too long. I don't even use it myself yet, and just seeing it on my friend's laptop so often has gotten me really used to how the interface looks and how it operates. I'll be buying a new laptop in either July or August, and although I was hesitant about Windows 8 around a year ago when I was introduced to it, it really isn't so bad anymore. It definitely isn't as built for the average PC as well as Windows 7 was though. Windows 8 tries a little too hard to be an all purpose OS, and that isn't particularly a good thing.

Hopefully with Windows 9, Windows will develop different versions for their mobile setups versus their desktop/laptop setups.

@ND, Microsoft will be releasing an update that adds the traditional start menu back at some point in time, so that'll be nice.

@Guild Always good to see someone who doesn't cry about Windows 8 for retarded reasons like "MAH START MENU "
If you don't want to even bother with the features, you can always install Class Shell which will just add the start menu back and be done with it. No need to use Metro UI or anything, get access to whatever you want the old way.

tbf, lack of a start menu was a valid complaint. sure you can just launch the newfangled metro start thing and type what you want there but the regular start menu was quicker and didn't take up the entire screen. for tablets, sure it makes sense but for desktops, it's convoluted and unnecessary.

i upgraded to windows 8 and downgraded back to win 7 a day later. just didn't like the whole metro ui stuff or the ui changes (ribbons everywhere, aero transparency is gone).

Well there is a Start Menu button, it just kinda runs like a program for some reason. It's not as fast or integrated as the original one.
