Now Playing: The Last of Us II (early game spoilers alert)

Well finally, after unsuccesfully trying to enjoy the Evil Within, the game failed me as it forced you to play as shooter games during forced boss battles. I am clumsy when it comes to shooter games, so I decided to drop it for now and maybe will resume it later if I am ever in the mood since my copy of TLOU2 just arrived yesterday.

I played TLOU in 2018. Pretty late since I skipped ps3 and mostly played the last gen games on my PC. Fortunately I like TLOU. The writing is great. There is a sense of realism within the characters' development, and of course, the violence.

Unfortunately I read a spoiler of TLOU2 so I kinda knew what was going to happen: Joel was dead. However, I didn't know the details of his death. Apparently he was killed early in the game, setting the plot into a motion. It was a powerful moment as Ellie helplessly watched him killed. Of course, as we, the players, are assumed to see the game from the perspective of our protagonists (Joel and Ellie), and his death was devastating since we hoped that Joel and Ellie deserve some happiness after the hell they went through in the first game.

However, if we considered how Joel's character was developed in the first game, somehow it is expected to happen. The game has always been about Ellie, and Joel is a father figure that was there to develop Ellie's character. A father figure like character that was killed early in the game (or later) is a common trope. However, given that Troy Baker is a prominent VA, I think it's a waste that Joel was killed so early in the game. I wish we could see more of him before he was really killed. But maybe it would make a weaker narrative? After all, the theme of TLOU2 is about revenge, and that humans in this game are more dangerous than the zombies.

I just hope Ellie's personality development wouldn't go downward spiral like that protagonist from Dragon Dogma's anime. The protagonist consumed by rage for revenge to the point rage was the only emotion he had, and it became his ultimate fall. By the end of the series, after he killed the dragon, he became the dragon and continued the vicious cycle.

Joel, ironically lost his humanity by the end of TLOU, and only regained it after finding a new home with Ellie (although their relationship has been plagued by his lie). Joel was a tragic protagonist with a very tragic ending. The only consolation was, he could see Ellie during his last breath, and he knew before his death that Ellie still cared for him despite being distant after she knew his lie.

I hope Ellie has a better ending.

on that note, I wonder how they create shampoos and soaps in TLOU universe. Do they have a currency at all?
