Scratched discs

You know what I hate? Scratched discs that won't read.
And oh boy, it's one of those days... again.

This happens so often to me now. A few months ago, I bought a used copy of RalliSports Challenge 2 for the XBOX at a trift store, not the most ideal place to buy used games, but whatever. The game played fine, but when it was time for me to copy over the game to my hard drive, it would read everything EXCEPT for 3 files.
Three. Whole. Files.
The files were stages that were already unlocked. I played the game directly from disc, but the stages would load for some god for saken reason. And this isn't my XBOX, it's just this disc that has a teeny tiny scratch on the surface.

And guess what, it happened to me again today. If you could see all scratches on this disc, you would say "oh jesus oh fuck who in their right mind jammed this disc in a TOASTER".

does this trift store rub every disc in dirt before they sell it
I think so, but that's just a theory. A Game Theory®! Thanks for watching!

It took nothing but 2 seconds for me to realise this was not going to work. And surprise surprise, it didn't copy over. This isn't the only demo disc I bought, I got a stack of 6, but the other 5 look completely readable. Can stores just check if a game actually works or not?

I'm not even going to try the toothpaste method, I tried it on my copy of RalliSports and there was no difference.
Also, to prove to you I'm a sellout, I bought these demo discs, $1,50 each, but I do not own a PlayStation 2, nor a PlayStation 3. I just wanted to back them up.

And uhh, yeah, just wanted to share this with you, trying to use the blog post feature more often instead of using it for shitposting on EoF.

(Stay hydrated.)

Edit:
Also something to note, this is a black sleeve PS2 demo disc, I don't know if they were ever sold, included in magazines or if they were only ment to be in PS2 kiosks. Let me know.

The black sleeve disc has the Yabasic programing language on it and was given away free of charge with the original ps2 in Europe. They did this to get around some ancient European tax that was imposed on consoles back then as Sony said it was not a console if you could program your own stuff on it or some sort of nonsense.

I see, but it never mentions Yabasic on the back, it just lists the contents on the back.

Also, I got bamboozled by the store even more, they never seem to check products themselves, so they put anything on their shelves. Apparently, the OPM2 discs I got aren't discs #18, #36 and #38, they're #39, #51 and #48. Only 1 of the OPM2 discs matches with the sleeve, so my guess is that whoever sent these demo discs didn't bother to put them back in the right sleeves and that a part of these demo discs were sold earlier this week.

Plus, they didn't even count the discs correctly, I bought 6 demo discs and they listed only 5, so I got one free (so I shouldn't even complain). I'm sure their employees have no idea what they're even doing.

And of course I'm blind and I didn't notice that Yabasic is on here after looking for the 5th time on the sleeve. Though, the list of games is here different and bigger.

Have you tried cleaning it? You can use lukewarm mild soapy water and a (very) clean cloth. IPA would be even better. Rub outwards, not in circles. And make sure to clean all the soap off, obviously. Light scratches usually won't cause read problems, but dirt and fingerprints definitely will.
I've seen people clean discs with a brush like dirty dishes, with no ill effects, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Scratched discs are sadly very, very common. What do people even do with their discs?! I got this Winx Club game one on the flea market in a complete package (Two PlayStation 2 Slim with controllers, cables and a whole bunch of games) for 20€. I did not even ask a question considering the price. At home I opened the Winx game which interested me… and almost fell down.

I tried my best to capture the DVD with both camera and scanner… but it did not work very well. When directly looking at this thing, it is A LOT(!!) worse. Did this girl use sandpaper on her discs or what?

Hope the pictures get embedded correctly, no preview on blog comments…

The PlayStation 2 was able to boot the game which took forever and each loading screen… forget it. Unplayable. My BD/DVD/CD burner on the computer made a strange noise for some seconds when I inserted this game. The drive (not kidding) almost sounded like it was puking. Then – to my surprise – it made a complete iso file with good reading speed. ESR patcher, a DVD-R and a FreeMcBoot Memory Card… and now the game works.

I have seen worse discs, my copy of Wii Sports is just like that, but at least it works! Why doesn't this one work?

And if life couldn't get worse, while I was scanning the discs and sleeves under our household printer so I can upload them to that archive site, the printer started clicking and the scanning mechanism died. The scanner would just get stuck at any point and freeze the whole printer interface.

It got further this time, the disc errored out at 29% on my first try, now it errors out at 32%. For now, I'll just force the disc to ignore any errors.

Any other cleaning methods maybe? I don't have IPA in my house atm.

Ok, here's something that worked for me in this situation:

Grabbing a q-tip, making the disc wet with luke warm water, dropping soap on the heavily scrached area and just scrubbing the soap back and forth.

After doing that twice, I was not even able to feel the scratches and the disc is now at 52% of copying. I should try this on RalliSports Challenge 2 as well.

There are a lot of retro game stores that can buffer off the very last layer of plastic on discs to get rid of scratches. Where I'm from it's 3 discs for $5. (apparantly blue-ray does work but it takes a lot because of how thick the plastic is)

Meguiars M105 Mirror Glaze Ultra-Cut Compound 8 oz.

This compound has a grit of 1200; low enough for quick results, but high enough to even out the scratches. They recommend using a compound with a higher grit with some wet sandpaper, but it takes a lot longer to arrive at the same result.

Apply a thin layer of polish to the disk, and make overlapping rotations with a microfiber cloth for at least 2 revolutions around the disk. Then wipe off the polish.

After a 3rd scrub, the disc was successfully dumped. No retries, no reading errors, so I definetly recommend the method I tried.
The CRC32 on this disc was A7E59F25, and downloading a random iso from the web resulted in the same CRC32, so I think it's safe to say this disc fuckery is over now.
