So, I'm writing an essay about the Odyssey

It's supposed to be about 20 pages of text, and I already have 3. I need more (and well-documented) information, so I can write the remaining 17 pages

If there's anything at all you can find that's related in any way to Homer's Odyssey, please post it here. I've done a lot of research already, but maybe some of you know the best places to get something.

Thanks :)

PS: Anyone who helps will be credited in the essay.

Prompt:
-Things in the Odyssey that could be true
-Books/films/games/anything based on the Odyssey

Comments

Watch the Odyssey movie with Christopher Lee (aka Count Dooku, aka Francisco Scaramanga, aka Sauromon). It's pretty hilarious.

As for the book, we read like one chapter in my English class and never touched it again. What's the essay about, though? I know it's about the essay, but what's the specific prompt?

I thought you meant the Magnavox Odyssey...If that was the case, you could have written about it being the first home video game console, or how you needed to use those crappy overlay things for each "game." But I haven't read the Odyssey, so I can't really help with that.

"Tales from the Public Domain" - 13x14.

Aha! Cheers, even though it wasn't really for me it would have really annoyed me!

I will echo the call for an essay title- few would say "the Odyssey..... get to it."

I assume you are reading a translated version, if you are reading the original greek then you can prattle on about phrasing (it is a poem after all and one made for a time when it would have to be spoken) and/or dactylic hexameter. Some translations attempt to keep such things but in my experience come off very forced. 20 pages sounds like big project and/or relatively high level work so maybe comparing translations.

"Cultural Impact" is one thing but if you can work it back and say something about the iliyad or more likely the Aeneid- another book with large sections on a similar subject but from a different perspective (always a winner in any medium).
While not quite as evident as the Aeneid the Odyssey does tie up a fair amount of folklore/legend.

Films, I recall some the other year but in possibly the most stupid deviation from original text I have seen Achilles survived as was in the horse- reading any account it was my understanding that the whole point of the horse was because Achilles was dead (they have taken our best, time for more something other than traditional warfare sort of thing).

As you asked for links though http://www.temple.edu/classics/odysseyho/index.html http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~dee/MINOA/HOMER.HTM
Most of the links I have are straight up translations.

Thanks! :) I can write a lot about the Aeneid, we read part of it in class, so I already know quite a lot of it and the comparison shouldn't be much of a problem :)

Damn, I knew I should've picked the Iliad D:

Also, I knew about the Simpsons episode, that's the reason I chose the Odyssey as subject :P But thanks anyways :)

If there's anyone with something more, feel free to post it here :D
