ARM-based PS2 emulator AetherSX2 suspends development indefinitely

unnamed.jpg

Just over a year ago, PS2 emulator AetherSX2 made a splash when it hit the Play Store as a surprisingly capable ARM-based PS2 emulator that could get solid performance Android devices, even some mid-range phones (depending on the game). The project left early access in July 2022, and development has continued steadily since then. However, today, the emulator's website was taken down and replaced with a post from the project's sole developer, Tahlreth, explaining that development has been "indefinitely suspended," blaming this decision on "neverending impersonating, complaints, demands, and now death threats."

"AetherSX2 was always meant to be a fun hobby for me, not profit driven," writes Tahlreth. "It doesn't make sense to continue working on a hobby which isn't fun anymore." They also warn of a number of "scammers" and imposters on social media who claim to represent AetherSX2, but do not.

The AetherSX2 Discord is also currently locked and not accepting new members, though it's unclear if this is a temporary measure.

It appears as though these frustrations with community complaints have been building for some time. In a developer update blog posted in July, Tahlreth discusses some new "micro-optimizations," before addressing complaints that the emulator cannot run on certain underpowered devices, explaining that these small optimization measures emphasize how little there is to do in terms of improving performance. They goes on to write, "Sorry, but your little Cortex-A53 is never going to cut it, so please stop saying 'AetherSX2 is unoptimized, give them time/devs need to work harder', there's never going to be a 5-10x improvement in performance in these scenarios, which is what you'd need. Instead, we'd like to point out the competition, and let you draw your own conclusions as to which implementations are 'optimized' and not."

Downloads are still available at https://www.aethersx2.com/archive/ and the Google Play Store, but no more builds will be developed in the foreseeable future, if ever.

No but considering that he might get backlash, plus the fact that he's already very disliked by the open source community for his controversial decisions and behavior the brownie points are very plausible.
Why do you care? They clearly don't, or they wouldn't make controversial decisions.

Their account seems more plausible than yours.

You're saying this on a forum that consists of over probably 95% pirates.
The honor among thieves fallacy. Also, only 95%?

Can you actually prove it? Like can you actually prove his account of the story, without proof it might as well be fabricated and you'd just be favoring his side due to him being the developer.
(if he posted proof I'll post a retraction but until then point still stands).

I can prove that people don't treat him with respect & instead question his account of what happened, which is the kind of behavior he is complaining about.

You seem incredibly motivated to post shit about him. Why is that?

He owes you no justification & his explanation doesn't gain him any advantage (if anything it seems to annoy you). Any sympathy it might possibly gain him, is absolutely worthless. He probably felt that closure would help him.

I don't care if you apologize, whatever feelings you want to create by behaving this way are yours to keep. You're the one saddled with it.

That's not death threats that's people complaining, everyone gets complaints, him maybe a bit more so since he has made many controversial descisions and has a history of toxic behavior.

Simple, there are plenty of people in the world who will lie about this kind of stuff to get pitty/sympathy and to illegitimize anyone who criticizes him for controversial decisions. I've known people like this personally
Also I'm not saying he did or didn't fabricate those threats, I can't know that (none of us can) I wouldn't put it above him though.

I'm not going to say he wouldn't gain anything from it since he does gain potentially higher respect from people as well as essentially silencing anyone who speaks even a little bit poorly of him.

I don't care if you apologize, whatever feelings you want to create by behaving this way are yours to keep. You're the one saddled with it.
I didn't say I would apologize I said I would post a retraction which is different.

In which case, there is absolutely no point in considering your opinion any longer.

You're making up unfounded accusations with absolutely no proof whatsoever.

Why would you do that? Well in your words "there are plenty of people in the world who will lie about this kind of stuff"

It clearly hasn't silenced you, what would it take for you to end this vendetta against him?

It hasn't silenced you. If you're an example of what he has put up with, he gets my respect.

If he is as toxic as you say, then why would you even care what he does? You're not entitled to change anyone.
