Metroid Prime fangame Prime 2D releases its first demo

Prime 2D is a fan-made remake of Metroid Prime in the style of the 2D Metroid games, developed by a group known as Team SCU. It is not, however, aiming to recreate a 1:1 version of Metroid Prime in 2D. Instead, it uses familiar elements from that game, like locations, music and enemies, and adapts and translates them to 2D as a commentary on the shift from 2D to 3D gaming. "Instead of copying the source material exactly, we are instead focused on taking the core concepts, translating those, and then implementing them in a logical 2D solution," reads a post by one of the team members from their official forums. "By doing this we allow ourselves to focus on building a good game first and foremost, and then using that as a base on which to create a familiar experience, rather than constraining ourselves to trying to implement 3D ideas in 2D space."

According to a post on their forums, work on Prime 2D started in 2004 and has continued irregularly since then, seeing several shifts in personnel along the way. After a lengthy silent period, Team SCU released their first full demo on their official forums on April 1, as a reference to a long-running gag of releasing fake demos on April Fool's Day. Currently, it is only runnable on Windows and requires a mouse and keyboard to play. It is unknown if gamepad controls will be added to this demo or future releases. You can download the Prime 2D demo at this link or at the source link below.

I betting maybe 48 hours before they get a C&D from the Big N
Nice, and while they write the C&D perhaps they finally remember they were supposed to be "developing" a new Metroid Prime and they stop the damn radio silence.

Hot damn I'd pay actual money for this to be completed even though it's a fan game. Let's keep it secret so Big Brother Nintendo doesn't try to be morons and take it down.

That's probably the best we can hope for actually...most Nintendo fan projects never make it to full release.
I agree with this but also when it happened to AM2R I felt so bad for the guy making it because it was literally years of work that went into it and then right after release Nintendo hits him with the DMCA notice. And to add insult to injury this project was known about for years and he kept releasing updates/demos for it for a while but they didn’t do anything until the full game came out.

That being said, the magic of the internet means that it’s still out there if you know where to look. And by that I mean it’s like a 2 minute Google search ;)

why even make such fan games. just change samus to another character and make a completly own game and earn big money. the effort put in this demo would result in an instant hit.
I also thought about something along those lines, but the problem is: If it's no longer Samus, it's not Samus. You'd have to try and make your own character and have other people like it, which is quite complicated. Making a game with IPs that are already loved by many is way easier, since people will be like "Oh, I liked the original games, let's see what this is about." Whereas people inventing new characters will need to get over the hurdle of making people like your characters and setting first.
Plus: Making a good Nintendo fan game is basically free marketing. Even if you don't earn money from it, you get lots of people to play your game or at least know about it, since there'll be news about it everywhere. I see more people talking about AM2R than Axiom Verge or Zordak for example.

I'm so happy for the extremely good quality of it and so sad at the same time thinking that the big N is about to send a C&D letter terminating another awesome homebrew game.

Let’s see how long it takes before Nintendo takes this down... hopefully they don’t pull an AM2R and take it down literally right after the full thing comes out.
Hope it's not before the full thing is finished. Atleast we can play a stable version of am2r even if it's slightly harder to look for on Google.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Nintendo on the edge of their seats drooling while thinking about the misery they're gonna cause the devs of this game while they waste years of his life for naught.

I'm here before 'Oh no my intellectual property which still yields profits today! Quick, send a C&D out because I'm triggered!' happens.

Do you have a surge protector or an UPS?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea but to play the next gen games, you must have those games on internal, or buy the official ssd expansion cards, which are expensive
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@MysticStarlight, dunno what each one of those are
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@MysticStarlight, my PS3 was already modded when my dad bought it for me and my brother
  • MysticStarlight @ MysticStarlight:
A surge protector is a device that protects your electronics from fluctuations. I recommend having your console plugged into one of those
  • MysticStarlight @ MysticStarlight:
An UPS is even better because it has an internal battery that keeps your system on even if the power goes out, but it's much more expensive obviously
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@MysticStarlight, oh i recall seeing one in some in the houses of some relatives, including my dad's apartment
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@MysticStarlight, although whatever device we plug into them stops getting power anyways lol

On the series s/x you can use a external HD but any next gen games must be on your internal ssd, or you can buy a ssd expansion card, but pricey. Any xbone, 360, or og Xbox games can be played from external tho.
