In the last month/month and a half, the Switch Scene has moved a lot. Currently there are a lot of different ways to enter into RCM [1], and a growing list of methods to send the payload to the Switch [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].

Right now for uploading the payload, a PC [1], Mac [10], Raspberry Pi (3 and 0)[11], and Android phones. Team Xecuter is also releasing a dongle with this purpose.

There's loads of posts written about all that, and I don't want to make a redundant post (especially when there's an excellent post just explaining it in detail [12]). I'm just wondering if it should be interesting to standardise all this a bit. And with that I mean finding the cheapest, smallest, more convenient way to do it, without paying to TX.

Could be a Raspberry Pi Zero with a couple of buttons (one to start the script, the other one to safely turn off the Pi) a good option? There's another option even more convenient (Android phones), but not everybody uses Android. Could be the Teensy another option? It has been suggested in the past, but it seems nobody has managed to effectively make it to manage the payload.

What do you think?

No, it shouldn't be standardised. Everyone has different devices and no one would buy another if it can be done for free (as in, on current hardware in possession, without buying any other). The more methods to enter RCM, the better.

Well, that's a perfectly valid argument. I was just thinking from the perspective of convenience.

No problem, just, you know, I think a Pi Zero is the thing the least people have. :P But that's a pretty nice list of (almost) all things Switch hacking, definitely going to use it.

Honestly, the only standard that we will agree on is that once Atmosphere is finished, everyone will be running it, except for those who are content with TX's modchip.

All this idea came to my mind after reading people writing about how with TX they just plug and play, while with the scene they don't know where to start because. In any case, Kate wrote something interesting yesterday which can go in this line: https://twitter.com/ktemkin/status/998313617769447424 This Twitter conversation is quite interesting, and other people such Mathieu Hervais were also thinking on this idea.

I totally agree with @SomeGamer, there should be enough alternatives to make this free for everybody. However, that doesn't mean that a cheapest+smallest+convenient solution should be found, precisely to avoid people giving money to TX for something that should be free.

In any case, we're still in the early stage of homebrew for Switch. Atmosphere will be the kickstart for developing the entire Switch ecosystem.

Some interesting, yet hard to implement, ideas I had was publishing statistics for entering RCM based on what we have available. Maybe even add level of difficulty and even a risk level category for each method. Also, the scene started out recommending bentpinhax which is arguably the worst method to enter RCM. Right now though, I think AutoRCM is probably the safest and easiest method we have since it is reversible and has a 100% guarantee to enter RCM.

I'm also assuming you're anti-TX? I'm just pointing it out even though I don't care whether you're for or against them. I feel that what they advertised is exactly the type of product their audience would prefer because of how noob-friendly it is. There's other members of the community besides Kate who are working on building their own dongle based on TX's modchip so you can look forward to that as well. Me? I'll just stick to paperclips and tethering, but I'll see what else sprouts from the Switch scene.

My problem is with TX (or anyone) asking money and close-sourcing the methods for these kinds of things.

I wouldn't call it noob friendly.. I mean people were putting the joycons in their system backwards and the grips upside down... So, someone will screw their system up and blame TX.

I'm also surprised people were suggesting 3D printing the parts when you can do the same folding a piece of paper with a cable stick with tape in it. As easy as print the guides marking were to fold and where to fix the cable with the tape and use... Or even easier, where 2 little holes must be done to let the cable out and in again to keep it in it's place... I mean, I know that 3D printing is more durable, but some people actually waiting for that piece of plastic to be printed and delivered...

Don't mean to throw TX in the wind, but that's their problem. Although, I do feel that GBATemp might catch some of that heat too when that person ends up asking us for help as well.

I get that. My reasoning is I won't pay for something that I can do for free. Jig? Nah, I'll use a paperclip. AutoRCM? It's called briccmii. Dongle? That's what my Android and USB-C cable is for. At this point, you're only paying for backup launching which will inevitably implemented into Atmosphere at one point or another by someone not from ReSwitched. Its only a matter of time.
