A few weeks ago I succesfully installed a XenoGC modchip in my gamecube. I haven't had any mini dvd-r's to burn games on so I've been using full size dvd r's in the meantime (With the pot set to 152) and it works fine, recently I bought these https://www.amazon.ca/DVD-R-1-46Gb-Mini-10pcs-Cake/dp/B001CJMDZ8/ and I tried burning a game on it. (Twlight Princess, the same game I burnt on one of my full size discs and it worked) but the gamecube refuses to boot it. I get an error everytime I boot it and it's frustrating. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work. I burnt it exactly the same way using imgburn. The disc is the right type, it should be compatible. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do? Thanks

EDIT: Here's the gamecube working a with a full size dvd-r and not working with my mini dvd-r. Both have the same game burned, twlight princess.

Then you have the option to adjust the POT from the Laser again.
But i´m afraid that the DVD-rs are maybe not compatilbe (the DYE and manufacturer is important).

Please check it when you start IMGBURN,write from image, put in an dvd-r:

Here's what it shows when I put one of my blank mini dvd-r in imgburn like you said. See anything wrong?

Maybe you'll have to replace the lens or adjust the potentiometer to correct the error

I have adjusted it and the lens works fine. the resistence is roughly at 151ohms (which I believe to be the lowest you should go) and it reads original discs fine. Reads the big dvd+r's fine. Just won't read these mini dvd-r's. My unit is a DOL-101

Thats Ok,mine was from an Verbatim miniDVD-R who works on the gamecube.
Do i understand it right that you can burn with 2x speed ?

Then i think you have to adjiust the POT.

By the way, when you start your burned miniDVD-R please can you look sideways into the Gamecube to look at the Xeno Modchip LED (RED or ORANGE).

What would you reccomend to adjust it too? It's already around 151ohm resistance. I have a DOL-101 if that helps. And I just checked. And yes I Can burn with 2x speed. But it's only allowing me to burn 2x speed also. I can't burn any faster than 4x on the mini dvd-r, which is fine I dont mind burning at 2x. And The light is indeed orange. As always when it succesfully patches (Which it has every boot so far, if not the big dvds would not be working) Thanks!

Sadly then it could only be the miniDVD-Rs.

The problem is that the label from the Manufacturer is right, but maybe the DYE or the laminiation underside from the miniDVD-R isn´t.CMC MAG AF.1 is right but maybe the production is different. My Verbatim miniDVD-Rs are about 3 years old.
The best was RITEK in the past but they are very rare and near impossible to get.I only recommend you to get 1 package of Verbatims if possible. An alternative are TDK but i have no idea if they work today.:(

That sucks, I paid about 15 usd for 10 of these mini DVD-r’s :( I found a 5 pack of ritek mini dvdr’s for about 19.50 usd. Would you say that’s worth it?

Try burning with a different drive if you have one (for example, if you have a laptop). Your burner might be working fine on fullsize disks but not the mini's.

It's a longshot, but there aren't many issues you haven't eliminated already. Either its the media itself, the laser pot (which I reeally don't like messing with unless absolutely necessary), or its the burner. Your use of Imgburn shouldn't be an issue if the fullsize disk burns are working.

I have a laptop, however it doesn’t have an internal disc drive. I’m using an external disc drive and it’s the only one I have. Thanks for the suggestion tho

Thanks! Kinda wish I could get 10 instead of 5 for that price though. There’s these ones I also found but I wouldn’t be sure if they actually work or not. Here’s the link if you wanna look at them but I’d bet their just as good as useless. Thanks :) https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?more=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.ca%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F172224270188

Do you think it’s possible to work if I try lowering the pot a little lower? It’s currently around 151 like I said but if I try around 100 maybe it could read these discs I have? Thanks

I had very good results with “Philips Duplicator Grade” mini dvd-r, sold in a 50 disk cakebox. No sellers anymore on Amazon, but there are other places that might have them. I went through 100 disks of these with only a couple coasters, which were the result of my burner being worn out. (that’s how I learned to suggest trying a different disk drive before giving up)

My GC with xenogc reads these easily, with no pot tweaks.

Its a trial and error.Try 1/2an mm turns,very careful,test,turn again,test,and so on,maybe it works.:)

I´ll read and look around but Verbatim or Ritek are no longer available on amazon.com.
If you have a chance to buy from amazon.de or amazon.co.uk there are:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=verbatim+dvd-r+1,4gb&ref=nb_sb_noss

https://www.amazon.de/Verbatim-Rohl....4gb&qid=1553034358&s=gateway&sr=8-2-fkmrnull

Good luck.:)

I have a multimeter so I'm able to see my exact value :) It's around 151 which has been working fine. There's no chance increasing it to 170 would help it read these discs, are there?

Gamecube Lasers are as known very picky.
There is NO GENERAL VALUE that you can use on all gamecubes. It depends how old/"burned-out" the laser is,maybe micro scratches.....you see not easy.I can tell you from my personal experience,i had many Gamecubes (purple/black/white) and NONE of them had the same setting.I go there, tear the GC apart and make it as i described above. And all of them worked fine.I´ll never use a multimeter.:D only careful little steps by turning the screw with instant test.I´ll also make it with XBOX Classic and Dreamcast drives. And as you discribed, your GC Laser is fine while reading Games and normal DVD-Rs.A dying laser don´t do this. And thats what me thinking of your non compatible miniDVD-Rs.

But this is exactly what makes fun about modding/hacking consoles.:yay:

The hint to try another burner was great, please check it if possible.

If you just want pi for emulation no point when Anbernic releases new shit every two seconds
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
What's really cool about Pi's tho is you can have multiple SD cards with different OS on each SD card and change from say a gaming machine to a full fledged pc if wanted
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Plus all bios are set up and usually includes at least 128gbs or 64
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Yeah but if your main goal is just to play n64 and GameCube you can save about $50 and have the portability option
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
True, but on 2 monitors at 4k. Its just want you want really, to each they own.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
For a kids aspect Anbernic would be the better option they'd probably melt over the price on a good 4k display

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
For that texasroo guy, I'd recommend the Spell and speak as his first system.
    +1
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
So they buy a pi5 kit for about $150 and say a 28" 4k display probably looking around $400 total
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They'll be getting in the territory of portable Pcs anyway
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again you get what you pay for, its like buying a S series for $300 but its only 1440p native, if you want true 4k, gotta get the X model for $500. But yea you right, when moms buying it anyways, you gotta stay cheap.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They could use HD out on their TV no real need for a monitor these days tbh the purists will disagree
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I'm kind of phasing out on the need for wanting all these consoles cool to have but they just become dust build ups
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I here ya there, I have too many myself, and have hard time letting them go, since most of mine I've modded at some point. Anymore I just play Switch on the go, seriesx at home.

I need to invest in some storage totes tbh

    Tootles
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
    Tootles? Wtf
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
    Oh tootles
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Oh totes , lol, like Tupperware storage, I gotcha

I'm designing my own entertainment cabinet for my man cave, to store all my systems, then I'm also designing a power supply/HDMI switcher so I can switch to whichever system I want, and power it also. Already picked up the cabinet board, but tinkering with my drawings before start
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
But yea, I have frogger arcade cabinet that I gutted and put a Pi4 then Pi5 into, but it never gets played much anymore, should sell it. Even when the kids come over, they don't want to play on it, just the xbox. TMNT and Simpson's arcade is still so fun on it, esp w 2 players.

Can't wait to see the new "stick" that can actually play Ps3 or 360 games. I know they are getting close.
