How can I make .avi files play in Quicktime?

How do I get .avi files to play in Quicktime? I found a download from Microsoft that lets you do this but it's only for Mac computers. Any ideas?

Personally I strongly dislike quicktime (both the application and the container), consequently I have no idea about yout your question.
Might I instead point you in the direction of quicktime alternative that would allow you to view quicktime files (even web embedded stuff) via another player which is in fact capable of playing back AVI files:

And when I do that, it gives me the right size window, but it stays black and the audio sounds like a screaching monkey.

FAST6191: I need to be able to .avi in Quicktime so that way I can save the video as a Quicktime reference link and then I can put that link in iTunes.

It'll depend on what codec(s) the AVI is using. Open it up in Gspot.

download a codec pack for it i can play almost any movie format in quicktime other then .rm but no one uses it anyway or you could use mplayer or vlc i like those also
