Hacking I just can't find the HDD power settings...

I've read every post and I've done everything, but I can't find the settings to change the 'sleep mode' on my Seagate 320GB (+ other brand external case).

I've installed:

Maxblast
Seatools
Maxtor Manager (won't detect)
Seagate Manger (won't detect)
Paragon HDD manager 2008

I can't find any settings.

This is really embrassing because I'm quite good with computers.
Could someone please help?

Hi,
same problem for me...

i found 2 programs that really change the parameters (HDDSCAN and HDPARM),
(i used the HDD without the enclosure directly on Motherboard)

but the HDD will loose its settings when plugged off and on again , no permanent settings possible,

so the usb-loaders should use hdparm every time they start....

frankomio, after setting up your HDD with HDPARM did you run hdparm -K hdX? If you don't it won't save them. Oh and WD desktop drives wont save them anyhows if that's what you're using.

That's bad news...

Many times (seems random actually..) when I play excitebots I lose my win because the HDD has fallen asleep during the race. Then I have to restart without having saved my hard earned win.

of course ,
i had run HDPARM -K 1 /dev/sdc
but it doesn´t keep the settings.....

and: i have an maxtor Basic portable 250GB, and inside its the seagate momentus sata 250GB, wich i used with HDPARM...


do you think hdparm works with USBdrives ?

btw: i trieg hdparm for windows AND with KUBUNTU linux, no difference...

Could you tell me the command you used for disabling sleep mode in hdparm?

Also, when I enter "hd(x)" it says that my drive is not valid. Is (x) supposed to be the drive letter or a number?

Bios will Not set it permanently....i think

please check google "man hdparm" for entire manual.....




1. check wich HDD ist the right one with hdparm -I /dev/hd(X) (X) = a, b, c, etc.

if your hdd ist SATA then: dparm -I /dev/sd(X) (X) = a, b, c, etc.


and then: hdparm -B 0 /dev/sdc (if the 3. disk ist the right SATA-Disk)
hdparm -Z /dev/sdc (to diable seagate power management (if possible))
hdparm -S 252 /dev/sdc (to set sleep mode to value 252, i think that are any hours...)
hdparm -K 1.... to store on disk

This worked, UNTIL the disk is powered off !!!!!!
so, it has to be done by the wii ! on every start
