Kyty, a PS4 and PS5 emulator, gets v0.1.0 release

kyty.png

After PS4 emulator GPCS4's update a couple of weeks ago, a new release has gone live for another emulator: Kyty. Like GPCS4, Kyty is still in its early stages of development, with the only release being v0.1.0. However, the main difference is that Kyty's developer calls the software an emulator for both PS4 and PS5 systems (even if graphics for PS5 is not yet implemented). While the Kyty GitHub page notes that users can encounter graphics glitches, crashes, freezes and low FPS, v0.1.0 can run some simple PS4 games on Windows 10 x64 systems.

In addition the following features have yet to be implemented:
  • Audio input/output
  • MP4 video
  • Network
  • Multi-user
Kyty is thus very much in its early stages but it might be worth keeping an eye out for progress in its development. To try it out, you can head to the official GitHub page linked below.

PS5 roms ? LOL!

That's really the basic idea.

ROM from cartridges, which use memory chips.

ISOs are images from any type of data disc.

They're labeled like that to distinguish the original source of the data.
No need to act like that
We all got the overall idea of what he meant

I'm bown away by how quickly modern consoles can be emulated. I suppose that comes down to how similar they are to PCs at this point. Still it's crazy how quickly we've seen Switch and now PS5 emulators, while the Sega Saturn emulators struggled for many years to get to a playable state.

Both are factually wrong.
You too.
1. There are no ROMs but images.
2. The games are encrypted. The key is stored somewhere in the console. Without a hacked console, the games cannot be decrypted and thus cannot be emulated. You can download the game somewhere for sure. But you won't be able to do anything with it.

Honestly we might be at a point where you don't need anything more than a medium to high end gaming PC to actually emulate it. At least the reasoning is that the hardware in the current gen consoles isn't far from consumer AMD cards. If people could get fullspeed N64 emulation on the toasters of old when it was still a new console, then this can happen with more than a healthy dose of tinkering!

PS5 and Xbox Series S/X still use AMD APUs (Ultra low-energy consuming ones at that), I'm pretty sure the Ryzen 7000 would smoke them when coupled with DRR5 RAM. But it hasn't come out yet lol

All we need is a translation layer, they're all x86-based now.
Consoles are pretty much PCs now, so "emulation" might not even be necessary anymore for the bulk of it.
Maybe for the fancy 3D audio chips or some select components, if they ever get used.

This is really impressive that we are able to run PS4 games on our computers now, and even PS5 games until our computers blow up lol! However, it makes me worried of this being an Icarus situation, so hopefully the people making this don't fly too close to the sun.

So far, i don't think it runs AAA ps4 games
And those it runs must be at less than 5fps i think

InB4 Sony pulls a Bleem playbook and attempts to get it pulled
Can they though? I know I heard that Sony won nothing.

from Bleem! - Wikipedia
Although Sony ultimately did not win any of its lawsuits against them, Bleem! had to shut down when the huge court costs became too much for the small company to handle.

Emulation is legal, you just cannot use illegal roms or disc images at all.

also, let's not forget that emulation was already proven legal a bit earlier.

from Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp. - Wikipedia
The Ninth Circuit Court reversed the district court's decision both on the copyright infringement and the trademark tarnishing claims, lifting the injunction against Connectix. Connectix immediately filed a motion with the district court to summarily dismiss Sony's lawsuit. After a failed attempt by Sony to appeal the case to the Supreme Court, the two companies settled out of court about a year later. On March 15, 2001, Sony purchased the VGS rights from Connectix. They discontinued the product June 30 of that year. Connectix itself closed in August 2003.

Video game emulation advocates have asserted that Sony vs. Connectix established the legality of emulators within the United States.

An ISO contains the ROM, similar to how rom files contain the ROM.

Yeah but if your main goal is just to play n64 and GameCube you can save about $50 and have the portability option

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
True, but on 2 monitors at 4k. Its just want you want really, to each they own.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
For a kids aspect Anbernic would be the better option they'd probably melt over the price on a good 4k display

So they buy a pi5 kit for about $150 and say a 28" 4k display probably looking around $400 total
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They'll be getting in the territory of portable Pcs anyway

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again you get what you pay for, its like buying a S series for $300 but its only 1440p native, if you want true 4k, gotta get the X model for $500. But yea you right, when moms buying it anyways, you gotta stay cheap.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They could use HD out on their TV no real need for a monitor these days tbh the purists will disagree
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I'm kind of phasing out on the need for wanting all these consoles cool to have but they just become dust build ups
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I here ya there, I have too many myself, and have hard time letting them go, since most of mine I've modded at some point. Anymore I just play Switch on the go, seriesx at home.

I'm designing my own entertainment cabinet for my man cave, to store all my systems, then I'm also designing a power supply/HDMI switcher so I can switch to whichever system I want, and power it also. Already picked up the cabinet board, but tinkering with my drawings before start
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
But yea, I have frogger arcade cabinet that I gutted and put a Pi4 then Pi5 into, but it never gets played much anymore, should sell it. Even when the kids come over, they don't want to play on it, just the xbox. TMNT and Simpson's arcade is still so fun on it, esp w 2 players.
