Maximum number of times you will fix something before you admit defeat and buy a new thing.

It depends, if it's cheap to repair and expensive to rebuy, I'll probably keep trying to repair it. If it's cheap to repair AND cheap to rebuy, I'll probably try to repair it about 3-4 times, as it's better to have "your" console that you had for a while than a new one. If it's expensive to repair and cheap to rebuy, I'm just rebuying on the spot. If it's expensive to repair AND rebuy, I'll probably give up.

If anyone has ever had Skullcandy Crusher Wireless headphones before, you'll know how fast those turn into 3d printed parts, super glue and tape. I would not let them die. They still work, just that I ended up getting the newer model (evo) and it's way better.

Great headphones! Went through 5 pairs of those! I have two pairs still, one that needs to be fixed (again after i had already installed a 3D printed hinge replacement) and both pairs have their earpads coming off.

Honestly i just want the Evo's now, right now my main pair of headphones is a pair of RB-M500B from Panasonic.
They chew through the battery so much more quickly than the Crusher though.

One day I'll fix my counter top ice maker. It has been collecting dust in my kitchen. I know the motor is rusty, and a replacement is like 10 dollars.
Update. I ended up buying a new one from Amazon, telling Amazon it broke, then sent them back the broken one, and keeping the new one. The main reason I didn't fix it my self was, because I left Vinegar inside of it, and the little metal bulbs inside of it turned blueish purple.

Those metal things. Anyone have any idea why exactly that happened, and how would you even clean that off?

Depends on the thing. I like to tinker, so I'll buy the cheap thing, and if it's not worth fixing, I'll bite and buy the more expensive, more reliable thing. Remember... Sometimes the CHEAP thing only exists as purposeful garbage made to fail on you, so you'll upgrade to the better mainstream thing. This applies to phones, 3D printers, kitchen appliances, etc.

The 10 years old fan trying to got to a better life, but I am pulling from the death, by now is 12-0 score to me :P

sorry buddy, On this heat wave I need you more than ever.
Tower fans really do require more maintenance than you'd expect. Bought some a few years back and they need cleaning/greasing every few months to lessen the friction. Got air con for bedrooms now to replace them but they still are handy in the garage on hot days.

3-4 times.

But it's never anything too hard that I don't know, I've thought about opening PS3/PS4s and clean them up though the problem is then putting them back and I'm wary of that.

Soldering is something I want to learn as a hobby and maybe someday to use it professionally as it's a very handy skill to have.

I don't remember reassembling my fat PS4 being particularly challenging. Maybe watch a video and see what you think.

If it is a software issue, I will DIE on that hill before I let a device defeat me.

I've spent literally 10 days straight, 12 hours a day, just trying to root a shitty LG Android phone back in the day. It took ten days for me to finally give up.

Same thing with my first tablet, which was an HP Touchpad. I spent more than a week on that, and finally beat it.

Can't do hardware for shit, so if there is a physical component that goes faulty, I have to pay someone to fix it, and won't even bother, but if it's a hack, a mod, or a software issue, I will never give up until I know I simply can't do it.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
For a kids aspect Anbernic would be the better option they'd probably melt over the price on a good 4k display

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again you get what you pay for, its like buying a S series for $300 but its only 1440p native, if you want true 4k, gotta get the X model for $500. But yea you right, when moms buying it anyways, you gotta stay cheap.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They could use HD out on their TV no real need for a monitor these days tbh the purists will disagree
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I'm kind of phasing out on the need for wanting all these consoles cool to have but they just become dust build ups
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I here ya there, I have too many myself, and have hard time letting them go, since most of mine I've modded at some point. Anymore I just play Switch on the go, seriesx at home.

I'm designing my own entertainment cabinet for my man cave, to store all my systems, then I'm also designing a power supply/HDMI switcher so I can switch to whichever system I want, and power it also. Already picked up the cabinet board, but tinkering with my drawings before start
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
But yea, I have frogger arcade cabinet that I gutted and put a Pi4 then Pi5 into, but it never gets played much anymore, should sell it. Even when the kids come over, they don't want to play on it, just the xbox. TMNT and Simpson's arcade is still so fun on it, esp w 2 players.
