so i heard about this game and apparently its pretty epic, so i thought i'd give it a shot. i have some questions.

1. There appears to be 13 versions out or something. Should i start all the way from the first one?
2. Are there english patches for the games?
3. I heard you had to do a few gimmicky things to get the music to work?
4. Are they free downloads or do i have to arrrrrr em?

thanks in advance

1. There's 13 different GAMES. I would start from the 7th one, it's the first one that's not on PC-95 (I think)
2. Yea
3. I've never had to do anything
4. You have to pay for them. Or pirate them. Either way.

1) You should start from first since it gets new features.
2) There are english patch. I remember playing the 5th one (Embodiment of scarlet devil, ithink its called this) and it was patched.
3) I never heard that.
4) Anything can be found that way

Just a heads up in that there are many ports/remakes including ones for the wii and for the DS.

From my still yet to be released next edition of GBAtemp recommends! homebrew (actually I am not sure I plan on finishing it any time soon):
9) Touhou DS by weeaboo. DS homebrew.

Touhou is a long running Japanese shmup series made by one person ( http://www16.big.or.jp/~zun/ ). Much like the BulletGBA and vulkanon mentioned in the introduction they belong to the bullet hell subgenre although these have some interesting twists (most notably being character driven).

Note there are two other Touhou inspired games for the DS and one for the Wii and it is well worth checking them out too.

1. Not really, First ones are like NES games latest ones are more way eye-candy but they have the same "bullet hell" shmup gameplay plus some improvements, Also 7.5 (Immaterial and Missing Power)/10.5 (Scarlet Weather Rhapsody)/12.3 (Touhou Hisōtensoku) Are fighting games.

2. There are, Also trust me you won't need any english here.

3. Nope, Rumours, working fine for me, But in case you had some problem posting it in this forum wouldn't hurt.

4. Pirate all the way, Buy latest if you like them to support the developer or just pirate.

BTW if you end up liking the genre make yourself a favor and get some Cave stuff for MAME.

@ FAST6191: Never knew there was 2 homebrew projects for ds besides the weeaboo.nl one, Thanks for telling about them.
