PlayStation 3 gets new firmware update for version 4.86

hADyVRG.png

Don't you just love seeing firmware update notifications for your legacy hardware? Sony sure hopes so, because they've pushed out a new firmware release for the PlayStation 3. What exactly does this new update bring to the table? Well, not much at all, outwardly. Sony offers the usual message of "This system software update improves the quality of the system performance". It's not stability, but it's close enough. Even in terms of exploits and homebrew, version 4.86 doesn't have much of an impact: according to PS3 scene developers, the kernel is unchanged. As always, it's wise to stay on your previous firmware until more information is available.

An update to the PlayStation 3 system software was released on 31/03/20. In order to download PS3 system software version 4.86, you will need a minimum 200MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).

nah m8, a firmware for the cybiko and cybiko extreme
How about my old Palm Pilot?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

this is like switch getting an update in 2050
That's an interesting way of putting it.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I don't think PS3's with PS3HEN installed are affected by the new update but am staying on old firmware just to be safe.
We can prevent the update by turning off automatically check system updates, right?

Nope, they need to renew the keys for BluRay playback. Of course there are probably ways to get around it, but Sony isn't gonna risk a copyright infringement suit because they bypassed DRM to allow people to play movies they own.

A encryption keys for playing BluRay have to to be renewed once a year.

It's most likely this. I'd expect updates like this for at least the next couple years.

So does that mean if the PS3 ever stops getting updates I won't be able to watch Blu-Rays on it?

If Sony ever stops, yes.

But I would imagine by the time that happens it won't matter anyways, because Blu-ray will either be using triple layer discs (which the PS3 doesn't support, only up to dual layer) or Blu-ray will be an all but dead format because of streaming.

I'm still on Rebug 4.84.2 CEX. Should I wait for 4.86 CEX or update to 4.85.1 LITE? What will I lose if I update to the latter and will I be able to access PSN? Maybe I should update to a non-Rebug 4.85 CFW. Which one is the "best" and why?

Hm.. Any word on whether this affects HEN users? I play JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle online, and occasionally use my PS3 for Hulu or Netflix, so not being able to sign into PSN is kind of annoying..

@Xdqwerty, No, but I've seen it on Vinesauce's stream.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, that game is one of the reasons i met newgrounds bc the full versión of it is in that site

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.

@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

The 2006 versión was made when the flash portal was made

Many people thought it was lost, but was discovered that he hid it on the same page.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:

Iirc the demos were removed from newgrounds in 2022
