So for the past few weeks I've been slowly watching the anime series known as Hunter x Hunter. The story of Gon Freecss, becoming a Hunter to search for his father, Ging Freecss! I've read the first ten volumes of the manga so I decided to watch it instead. I prefer moving pictures to the still ones. So I look up Hunter x Hunter the series online and decide to check it out. I see it's dubbed but hey who needs to listen to anime of your own language when you can just read the amazingly perfect never wrong subtitles!

So I've made it established to myself through the manga that their names are Gon and Ging of the Freecss family. Right out the gate the subs are spelling out his name as Gon Freaks. Okay we're off to a great start. Shortly after we're told of his amazing father, "Jin Freaks".

Okay, instead of Ging Freecss we've got Jin Freaks. This too will bug me but hey, it's the first episode. I'm sure they'll fix it as it goes on like most anime, right?

So we move on into a few episodes, and here we see him called by Jin again. Haven't fixed their mistake yet I see. Keep in mind that the anime's a year and a half older then the manga, where all manga sub groups have been spelling it right.

Anyway....so now we're at Episode 31. The hunter exams are over and our hero Gon is now an officially licensed hunter! Huzzahs are in order! One of the first things Gon and his friends end up doing is using their new class to look up information of his father on the internet. Great idea, I'm sure his dad exists. Let's look up Jin Freaks on that ol' internet!

Did you catch that? Here, let me point it out.

In closing: Subs are indeed superior to dubs. Always. Thank you for your time.
--------------------------
UPDATE: I am now at Episode 47. As I'm sure you all remember, it was only episode 31 where the anime spelled his correct name out, yet the subs still got it wrong. 16 episodes later, did they fix it!?

Nope! =D

everyone already knows that subs are better than dubs...

also, i'm pretty sure subs can (and often times are) not 100% correct as its almost impossible to translate complicated prose perfectly from one language to another. the only true way imo is to learn the language you're listening to.

Yeah, it wasn't very obvious. /sarcasm

But yeah...it really depends on the sub group just like it depends on the production/licensing company for dubs. Although, the people putting out dubs get paid for it, fansubbers do it for free.

The point of this that I didn't really make clear. I prefer dubs over subs for a few reasons that others would probably call nitpicking. Besides the obvious I like watching over reading, it's inconsistancies like this. In pretty much every thing I've ever seen subbed, take this example from Code Geass a while back, I really really nitpick when things are spelled wrong, or sometimes ...how can I explain this. When subs do the literal translation and everybody talks like a middle school english teacher and just uses the most boring and straight forward ways to explain everything. Like think of a character getting really really excited over something, and the sub just reads "Wow, that is amazing!" Yet whatever they're saying, it's sure as hell longer then that.

It just bugs me. However in this case...this is just pure lazyness.

I hardly watch animu, but I've seen about the same amount of dubbed vs subbed and I prefer dubbed.
I don't see why subs would be so much better.
Oh the voice acting is so terrible blah blah blah..
I mean, yeah there are times that the voice acting is horrific, but that's pretty rare imo.
usually the voices are fine and people still complain

only real advantage of subs is you can watch a lot more, because there's a lot of subbed stuff that otherwise isnt available in english

I like whatever provides funnier lines, engrish, etc be it original material or a goofy translation. But I don't understand why one would be more accurate than the other, they both require translation ?

fairly sure the group who were subbing this were subbing the series as it aired. they had no idea about how names were properly spelled. seriously, you hear "Ging Freecs", wouldn't you assume Jin Freaks was the proper spelling and it was just some engrish the mangaka put in? i know for sure they corrected it later on as Ging's name is a fairly big plot point for the end of the anime.

weeaboo's complaining its not as accurate as the nippon original. a lot is left out in the translations to a dub and no translations notes, so companies sometimes completely change the intended script. there is also the problem with godawful voice actors, which imo is quite obvious to see the difference in quality, japan has a multitude of schools dedicated to voice acting, whereas america..... has the occasional class where a well known actor (i know vic mignogna does these)has something like 4 people. also the awkwardness that occurs when a va says honorifics in an american fashion.

but then again with dubs you don't get shit like this:

A good video with talking requires good voice acting. Fandubs usually cannot provide that. And the commercial dubs micht be horribly altered (think most popular animé) or non-existant (think most other). So all-wrong names and barf-worthy Engrish are a price I am willing to pay.
