The Nintendo 3DS has a new firmware update available in the form of v11.12.0-44

It's stability time! A brand new update is out, for the Nintendo 3DS. Firmware version 11.12.0-44 has just released, bringing with it...well, no one knows exactly what it brings with it just yet. The yls8 page shows the update having gone out for most regions tonight, but Nintendo's official website hasn't updated to show the changelog (and obvious stability additions) as of the time of writing. What we do currently know is, a handful of titles have been updated thanks to this new firmware, including NVer, CVer, StreetPass, friends system-module, NATIVE_FIRM and Web browser data. More information will be added as things become more clear.

UPDATE: And to no one's surprise, here are the patch notes from Nintendo:

Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

Currently, Luma still boots, but is not confirmed to be 100% working, while other homebrew and CFW are being tested.

Oh boy, I wonder what isn't new! (Seriously, what do they change with these things? No hacks are broken usually.)
i wonder the same thing about the 5000 android app updates i get a month
nothing ever changes or improves ever but sometimes things break
and if it is a google app it breaks and does not usually get fixed for months years or never
i guess devs need some excuses to keep receiving a paycheck after all
literally 1000 "updates" to some app but change log has not changed in all 1000

It amazes me that Nintendo wastes development time on a dead platform to seemingly no avail. What's the goal? To prevent piracy & homebrew? That's a waste of money at this point as it would just be an endless game of cat-and-mouse.

Nintendo should instead focus development on the Nintendo Switch & add actual features to the Switch. Features like Achievements, Themes, A more fleshed out user page, etc.

Evidently not.

I can assure you, minimal support for a system that still brings in sales is not preventing Nintendo from working on the Switch. If they're not adding the features you want, it's because they don't care to add those features, not because of the 3DS.

Reminder that Mario Kart 7 sold over 1.2 million copies in the previous financial year. Much of it from bundles, meaning hardware sales, meaning more software sales because new customers are likely to also buy more games down the line.

The eShop might as well be free money for them too. They don't even have to worry about printing games, all they have to do is keep up with server costs and people buy games full price, which ultimately gives them more money than if that person had bought the game on day-1.

Sales are lower than they used to be, sure, but they are far from nonexistent.

I know Luma is working fine, but I'm still holding out in case of a banwave.
Though I might just be paranoid.

You'll be fine, 11.12 barely changes anything from 11.8

sm is identical, fs, pm, loader and pxi only had their product code changed, and Process9 only increments 16 bytes by 1 in what I assume to be the minimum version list.

I'm honestly not sure why they bothered.

Yeah. I just bought mine (my first ever handheld) direct from Nintendo last week. I'm not the least bit interested in a Switch or I would have bought that instead. The 3DS is far from dead as they are still selling new 2DS units and so-called refurbished New 3DS XLs (mine looks brand new) on their website. I recognize Splatoon and Bayonetta aren't coming to the 3DS, but they'd be foolish to abandon it when it's still selling hardware and software. (As an aside: not only did Just Dance 2020 just get released for the Wii due to good sales last year at this time for JD2019, but they still sell new copies of Mario Kart Wii - some 40,000 in ONE QUARTER last year!)

And as a practical matter, the "continuing engineer" that worked on the legacy 3DS firmware prolly spent less than an hour on the fix and is prolly not one that would be tasked with adding the Switch features DJ91990 is asking for.

Back on topic: I went from 11.9.0-42u (which it shipped with) to 11.10.4-43u a few nights ago using the guide at 3ds.hacks.guide and have updated to 11.12.0-44 today without issue. I'm not one to turn my back on additional stability, even when I didn't ask for it.

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

The 2006 versión was made when the flash portal was made

Many people thought it was lost, but was discovered that he hid it on the same page.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:

@SylverReZ, also the pico 2 demos used to be only for the newgrounds patrons but they are on internet archive too (https://archive.org/download/picos_school_2)

Iirc the demos were removed from newgrounds in 2022

Fun fact @SylverReZ: iirc one of the goals on the fnf Kickstarter stated that pico 2 would be finished but the Kickstarter didnt get enough money for that goal to be fullfiled
