What's a good freeware program that will convert my various video files to a PSP compatible format? It's weird that Sony's website says the Media Go is compatible with AVI, m4v and a bunch of other video files but they won't play in the program or on the PSP Go.

Sony is correct, though its the way you convert the .AVI files.
I'm sure if you type PSP video converter something will just come up

Xilisoft is good, but not free. Super has a lot of trouble for me, all I've been able to do without trouble is mux.

While MediaGO may have codec support for the file formats the PSP only supports the mp4 container, I don't know what video formats it supports. PMP Player is slowly giving it much needed file-type support.

handbrake?
Handbrake sucks for netbook owners, seeing as how you need at least a 12 inch screen to run it and my computer has a 10. Either way, it's not light weight and takes forever to convert video files, granted trying to convert a full DVD rip to a smaller format is tough.

It's free, converts everything I want (suppotrs subtitles!) and uses h.264 what means maximum possible resoultion 480x272 when other converters usually use normal mpg4 codec which allows only lower resolutions.

PSPVC is the best I've used so far. Fantastic results and easy to use.
I agree, go with PSPVC. Professional interface, highly customizable settings and great results. And best of all, free.
