Steam, now I've done it

There's nothing so tragic, as watching a hard core digital pirate go honest :)

Yeah, recently I had to format reinstall the OS on the laptop (ok didn't 'need' to wanted to). I was motivated by a sneaky cock sucker of a program that snuck on by pretending to be an anti virus (talk about nasty irony eh). Couldn't uninstall it for love of money.

So I decided time to format re install as the laptop wasn't correctly partitioned when I bought it in December anyway (only fucking idiots use a non partitioned computer).

Pity I didn't think to back up the purchased legit OS first (thus ensuring I lost all credibility with my computer guru buddy that needed to help me fix my mangled internal wireless). Damn good thing I'm not a female, or I would have had to deal with thanking him on my hands and knees :) (he's single and prefers to work for free for the occasional girl hehe).

Soooo during the part where I re install all my damned games I discovered for some damned reason my Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East expansion simply would not successfully install. It was working just fine earlier (somehow). But it was also a lot of screwing around getting the base game and Hammer of Fate expansion installed as well. Plus using the usual cracks. I decided fuck this crap, and looked at Steam.

I already use Steam for Civ V so regardless of what I think of Steam, I was already using it. Thus, no point in making any fuss over using it for anything else. And I discovered the HOMM V game on sale for a total of 27 bucks on Steam and thought fuck it's not like HOMMV is a great game (it's ok but not the best of the series), but 27 bucks and no more hell to install is ok with me.

So I bought the game.

Back when the game was first released to the market, it cost a lot more. It was also never a darling of the shelf and thus it was hardly a browsing the shelves impulse buy option. It was never around for the most part in my hometown's limited market.

But it feels almost 'odd' buying games legit hehe.
The base game and the HoF expansion copies installed fine. I might have gotten away with installing Tribes from a legit copy and keeping the other two not legit ones of course. But I figure, in for a penny in for a pound.
And to be honest, I don't download games because I like to, it's because I'd rather spend my limited funds on food for the family and good food at that.
But when the bills are paid, and the freezer is stocked, it feels good to be able to buy the real deal.

Although every last fucking cent of my income is disability pension income. I am not really paying for anything in my life. Who am I kidding eh. Lost my pride as well as my health back in 1995. But at least when I buy things the funds are at least going to businesses that can at least appreciate it.

I might grab a few other Steam titles.

I don't mind that the service's annoying aspects have nothing to do with actual DRM programming that fucking damages or limits the use of the game in any fashion worth comment. I can only play the game on one machine at a time. Not an unreasonable request. I can install it on every computer on the planet at the same time. I can only be logged in on one at a time though.

Plus my computer guru buddy seems to have mentioned it is handy to use the chat function of the service as well. Something I have not tried yet, but think I will.

Comments

I've been an avid Heroes III player ever since the demo came out in '98 or '99 before the actual release, and also later played and enjoyed Heroes I and Heroes II.

Haven't played IV and V much, but they seemed worse than the first three, although IV more so than V.

How do you think V compares to the others in the series and which one is your favorite?

Played HOMM 1 before the others existed. Liked it. Till HOMM 2 made me like 2 more so.

I think most consider HOMM 3 to be the best. It has the most made for it too I think. Plus it has WoG.

I like HOMM 4 but I recognize some of it didn't fly with the fans. Same sort of issue that has impacted Civ V, too much too different from what everyone was playing.

HOMM V's main draw back is the 3d takes up too much screen the view area is reduced, you don't see as much map view and that might really be the main issue for some.

I'm curious to see how the supposed up coming HOMM 6 is going to look.

I have the new King's Bounty, the game that originally inspired HOMM. It looks ok, but it's not really the same sort of game action. It's more RPG that turn based strategy.

I am more likely to be playing HOMM 3 if playing vs people as most of my friends prefer HOMM 3 WoG.

Man, Heroes III matches vs people really do take time.

Had a game that went on for just over a month. I guess we played 1-2h each per day.

Nice that you have friends that like Heroes, it's been years since I played against anyone other than Impossible AI.

Be careful, I've spent probably at least 500$ on Steam (It's those damn $2 or 5 sales that add up I'm really tempted to buy Dead Space which is 6.80$.)
Has been my source of game purchases for the last 3 years, except for Starcraft II.

Can't do both? I still have never purchased a PSP or DS game.

Offline mode on Steam will allow some features of the game, mostly single player.
The Steam Overlay is my favorite, add Non-Steam Games to your list to use it in any game. Nothing helps pass the time in the 20 seconds spawns in Team Fortress 2 like a little web browsing. Else YouTube for music and easily change songs without alt-tab
