What do most users do here, turn it off or leave it on?
Any side effects to turning it off? Will i just not be alerted to msgs or firmware updates until i turn on the wii?

I leave it off.
You just don't get any messages when you're console is not on. Or something like that, nothing cool.

That sounds rather bad BlueStar. I turned it off right after I got mine. Don't see the use for it and I don't want it to notify me about firmware updates or messages. I never read those messages anyway.

i leave it off because like many here i do not want to run the risk of damaging my launchday wii and having to get another wii and chip etc...

I just leave it on. I'm not even sure if I really feel the warmth, so it can't be that bad

Besides, I haven't modded it, so Nintendo will have to give me another unit if this one doesn't work anymore.

will never turn it on, scared it might damage the GPU, as I doubt Nintendo Europe would replace my US system with another US one, and I don't want them finding a way to do a stealth update and fuck up my modchip

Some people take the whole "the wii gets warm during wiiconnect24" a bit to far.

You lot make it sound like it will melt in a matter of seconds.

When i had wifi (getting it back soon) i left my console on wii connect24 all day. My wii was hardly warm.

Well not really just look at the amount of people that were convinced their launch day 360 would never fail.
