My GBA SP AGS-101 is clearly very troubled. It frequently shuts off or freezes up for seemingly no reason, and as of recently the buttons (D-pad and A/B specifically) are only registering sporadically or with great force. Is this something I can fix with simple cleaning or do I have motherboard damage that requires repair? If so, does anyone know where I can send my SP for such a repair? I don't have anyone locally who does console repairs, especially not older consoles.

Without seeing the motherboard nobody can really say. It could be a simple thing, or it could be something more involved. I don't think we have a decent source of 101 motherboards either just in case you thought about just swapping it.
It does not sound like a common failure method, though I would ask what game/flash cart you are trying -- shutting off and freezing can be caused by them. It could also be a bad battery, and the ones out there these days are all way past their time.

The cleaning approach could be done by anybody that does board repair -- if you can replace a surface mount resistor on something then you can probably do this.
Buttons not working is usually the underlying pad/carbon traces are no good, but in conjunction with freezing/powering off
As far as specialist repair then there tends not to be any other than those working on specific consoles, and nobody really does 101 stuff (some might do things to install 101 screens on earlier models but that is a different matter). Those doing component level repair on phones, tablets, laptops and whatnot should be able to do this, however we don't really have nice diagrams ( https://circuit-board.de/forum/index.php/Thread/13913-STRIP-CLUB-PCB-Scans/?pageNo=1 does not have SP of any flavour right now but generally is as good as it gets) and I don't think the gigaleaks gave us any. Those working in phones and whatnot often having nice diagrams to reference against such that they can clean things up, reseat components, replace basic passives and go from there. This might change in the future if prices for such things keep going up (for many years new GBA, though maybe not 101, was next to nothing and people shocked you would want it so repairs and knowledge base for it tended not to be a thing).

It's definitely not game-specific, I've had the same issue with every game I try as well as my old EZ4 flash cart. It seems like the board gets flexed somehow and that triggers it to shut off, sometimes it stays off and other times it merely restarts. The button issue is a new thing, it started after I opened up the SP to clean the power switch to make sure that wasn't the problem.

buttons are tactile ones and they go in failure if used long time. One will help: desolder old buttons on the PCB and solder new one.

Search for tactile switch with really poor force

My buttons did get better after cleaning the main board with 91% isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush, so maybe they were just dirty? They're not all the way better but directional inputs are actually being recognized now.

I had a similar issue with one of mine that was caused a swollen battery. I use to repair these boards back in the day when everyone started stripping out the 101 screens.

@ColdBlitz, i forgot breath of the wild released for the Wii u

$60 for a game that's a decade old might be unheard of on PC but actually is not uncommon on consoles

especially Nintendo because they only ever lower the price of games when they do a greatest hits/platinum hits/players choice re-release
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@The Real Jdbye, and the HD collections released for 7th gen consoles too
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but they don't seem to have done any of those for the switch yet and maybe never will
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
I think we all forgot breath of the wild released for the wii u tbh

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@The Real Jdbye, tbh the HD collections are more justified since they include more than just 1 game per copy
