Is it theoretical possible to:
* Run GCN or Wii software in Wii mode (obviously not using software emulation - instead using something like Nintendont)
* Use the Wii U Gamepad in Wii mode to control official games or homebrew software

Actually, Wii software can be run on a Wii U without any haxx. The Wii U contains a built-in virtual Wii mode that does this.
You can also use a Wii-mode hack that allows you to play GameCube games (Nintendont)

Though, as of now you cannot use the Wii U GamePad to control Wii or GameCube games, the GamePad exists only as a screen. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that anyone will even start looking into this until an IOSU exploit is released, since this type of hack is impossible without it.

It is worth mentioning that Wii Virtual Console titles are controllable with the Gamepad, although nothing has really come of research into it.
