There's an external hard drive I'm looking at online and it offers encryption as an advertised feature. I don't want to use this because I would much rather use Veracrypt or LUKS which is already built into Linux Mint. I don't want to use some proprietary solution over open source solutions which I trust more.

When encryption is an advertised feature is it something you have to opt-in for or something you have to opt-out of?

I use bitlocker on my internal m2. The only real downsides are that you need to signin with a Microsoft account. And, I have to erase the drive first to flash a disk image. That's through acronis.
