Hacking Majora's Mask VC Injection tutorial

I don't have any time to test out new injections and I have Windows Vista which u8tool does not get along with, so I decided to write a tutorial explaining how to inject roms into the new PAL Majora's Mask VC release. You can use this method to inject an NTSC Majora's Mask into the PAL wad and it is fully working, by the way.


First, you get a copy of Majora's Mask (google it, 4chan's rapidshare board might have it)

Then, you get a copy of freethewads (Google it, it's available on these forums) and region-free it.

Next, download Healthii and either install it or use Universal Extractor. You basically want all of the tools that come with Healthii -- wadpacker, wadunpacker, Howard C's u8tool, etc... Now you unpack the Majora's Mask wad.

Next, use u8tool to extract the 00000005.app.

Now you should have a folder called 00000005_app_out and inside should be a bunch of files. We're looking at a file called, "romc".

Download jurai's VC romc Compressor/Decompressor and run it on the rom you want to inject. Basically you want to do the command romc e rom.z64 romc.

Now you have a romc file from your original input rom.

Paste the romc file into your 00000005_app_out folder, overwriting the older romc file

Open up Howard C's u8tool and select 00000005.app, again, but this time press Pack.

Now re-pack the wad using wadpacker.exe.

Now you should have your working wad of a ROM injected into Majora's Mask ready to install on your Wii!

When it comes to N64 WADs, each game has an emulator built specifically for the game. Each one is unique, especially Majora's Mask as the game itself originally needed the expansion pack. Several ROMs previously injected into N64 WADs required the expansion pack, and since all WADs before this LACKED that, they failed. It's still a mystery to see which will work now though. It's a whole new playing field

I did this at my friend's house with Windows 7 and I got an NTSC Majora's Mask working fine. I have Vista here and u8tool doesn't extract with Vista, so I had to use u8extr. That seemed to work out, but when I repack the wad, all I can get is a #307 data corruption error.

Nevertheless, this did work on Windows 7, so I suspect it also works on XP.

Has anyone been able to get the NTSC version of Super Mario Kart thats been injected into Donkey Kong Country 2 working on their PAL machine? I've set it to PAL using Freethewads but still no luck.

All of them freeze either at the "You need a classic controller" screen or at the N64 logo. Mischief Makers, however, makes it to the title screen, but freezes when you press start.

I have Vista and (though I haven't tried booting in Safe Mode) HowardC's u8tool doesn't work. I tried using a different tool (u8extr.exe) which did in fact work, but after the whole process was done and I installed the wad and tried to run the VC game, it just gave me data corruption errors. Nevertheless, if you use the tools I posted the instructions for on Windows XP or Windows 7 (or maybe Windows Vista in safe mode, but I haven't tested it), it should work.

I was using the wadpacker and wadunpacker from the "New VC Injector."
I had healthii installed but I didn't think of using those files until that error kept on pestering me from completion.
kekeke, I ended up making the NTSC version of Super Smash Bros; with improved controls.

The Japanese VC release of Super Smash Bros made the the controls similar to melee/brawl in that D-Pad is to taunt and Z is to grab.
The Paradox injection of Super Smash Bros had Z as taunt and R was the grab button.

Using this technique, injecting the NTSC version now enables these "better" controls without region differences.
They never really bothered me, but pestered my friends.
