CD damage – anybody seen such a mark (<800kb photo)

I'll try to keep it short this time.

This CD is damaged:
Strange_CD_damage.JPG

It is already hard to see when moving the disc in the hands; and even harder to take a photo of if. I increased the contrast of the image so the smudgy part can be seen as a dark mark. There are no noteworthy scratches on this CD, I polished it (still some dust on it just from the minute of trying to take an acceptable picture). All in all one would say that this thing should work perfectly. I didn't even notice the strange, discoloured area at first (the colour just differs a little bit). Only one specific angle shows it and without higher contrast it isn't very noticeable on the photo.

What to say? 4 out of 5 drives failed reading the data exactly at this point. The fifth drive got through it successfully with heavy slowdown.

Normally it is not important to me if I receive comments on my blogs. This time I would be really glad to get some… answers, or ideas or whatever. Anybody seen something like this and/or got an idea what this damage is? I got the CD in this condition a few weeks ago and don't know its history.

Looks almost like a burn, and not on the top layer as much as either on the foil (would ask what the foil layer looks like) or within the plastic of the disc.

@FAST6191 Keep in mind that it doesn't look that dark in reality. Still a plausible idea. But how? The mark is inside – neither on the polycarbonate protective layer nor on the label side. The label side is a 100% perfect.
@CoolMe Also a plausible idea. Same question: How should it have gotten inside? No visible damage (upside, downside, edges).
@SaulFabre No, I didn't. The surface is okay. This is why the damage is so puzzling. Resurfacing won't help.
@alexander1970 Wow! This discs look awful! But is seems more like on the surface so that resurfacing might help (when wearing gloves; I feel sick from just looking at this)

Thanks for the ideas/comments.

Forgot to mention: The disc is CD1 of the game Catwoman (which got pretty bad reviews – I found it interesting on the first minutes, but it crashed frequently on my test machine). The disc still authenticates, but the game doesn't install (just from the one drive). My burners were semi-successful at creating a copy (Safedisc 3.20.20). The CD-R copy only passes the check in some drives.
