Kinda strange how the simple analogue music cassette survived longer than DAT and MiniDisk.

No DAT machine in my HiFi equipment. But I have a CD to MiniDisk copier supporting LP2 and LP4. @IC_ If you don't mind ("stealing ideas") I will post a similar blog entry about the MD recorder.

digital audio tape is suited for archives of any sound.
get yourself a set of good mics and record great things!
since this is an indoor unit use it for interviews or recording instruments.. or DAT to digital transfers

just remember for the best recordings Mics > PREAMP > DAT
i use a portable DAT (Sony D-8)

@drfunkenstein2k I don't think I need any microphones for this, any musical instruments I would record on this would probably only be synthesizers or other electronic instruments.

I absolutely love tape machines but I’ve never had the chance to listen to any DAT tapes as I simply do not own the equipment nor the tapes. But this is awesome and now I’m jealous :0

Small update about the thing, a few months ago I bought some used 94-minute and 124-minute DAT cartridges, they had some old German recordings but they also work flawlessly.

Recently I also decided to risk using a DDS4 tape in this recorder. It actually works and didn't break anything, I was able to make a test 4 minute recording without any issues. The only problem I noticed is the tape counter jumping around, it goes about 2.5 times fast at normal playback speed and even faster when fast-forwarding or rewinding. Still, I wouldn't recommend anyone to use DDS cartridges as DAT cartridges, it might not work as well if you used them a lot.

Also, @MicmasH_W, sorry about not responding to your post back in November, but you can "listen" and get the same sound quality experience with a modern uncompressed 48kHz 16-bit PCM audio file and a good DAC/amplifier. Of course I understand the nice things about using physical tapes and older professional audio equipment like this, but you should know that if you didn't already.
