How do you save Mario Tennis GBA?

I can't find out how to save the game and I've been playing the intro for over half an hour now. I've gotten to the second day where you can access the area with the coaches. Do you unlock saving later? It seems the intro is a bit long.

Emulator, but GBArunner2. That one doesn't have state saves as far as I'm aware. I quit the game eventually and found out it has some sort of autosaving, as the game got saved during one of the training session on court. That's a bit annoying though, as I don't know when did the game save and when I need to proceed with the story/do more (like do a match).
