(The thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are not meant to be hateful in nature to any one group or person. If you feel like this post attacked you, please settle it with me by PM.)

Just thought I'd do a bit of a different topic than usual. One thing I've noticed after being exposed to nerd culture (AKA gaming and whatnot) I've noticed quite a few people who are Japanophiles.

Japanophile: A person with an interest in, or love of, Japan and all things Japanese.

I put that there so our terms aren't confused. Basically, I notice a lot of people here and in other places of nerdom really like Japan. Most people relate this to love of anime/video games, but I've seen many people who don't like anime and still really like Japan (I have yet to see what can be called an "anime fan" who doesn't love Japan). Now, I don't consider anyone who likes Japan a "Weaboo" or an "Otaku". Those are terms I personally shun being called or referring to other people as (Unless in joking). I, however, can say to an extent I exhibit some qualities of being a Japanophile such as liking certain aspects of Japanese culture and wanting to learn the language as well as visit the country one day.

I want to be clear on the fact that I don't think it's a negative thing. I remember there being a large quantity of people in America who were obsessed with Indians and wanting to become one. I recall an episode of Saved by the Bell (Half of you probably just died or projectile vomited) where Zack learns he's partially an Indian and has to give a report on them. I think it's healthy to like another culture that isn't your own, as long as you're a grounded person and don't go too far with it (One guy I knew shaved his head in an effort to become a monk).

So basically, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's weird or bad that people can become obsessed with a foreign country such as Japan? Or do you think it's normal? What about those who are obsessed with niche part of that culture such as anime or video games? If this becomes a debate relating to something else I'll request to have the topic locked.

There are plenty of people obsessed with many other cultures, of course in vg communities Japan is prevalent (for obvious reasons) and having an interest in culture isn't weird...it's a good thing, as it makes you cultured (usually.)

I am 100% with you. I really enjoy learning about different cultures. I especially enjoy finding the bits of each culture that I can apply to my daily life. As seen here though, i definitely feel there is a line that many people cross in their obsessions.

I could be considered one, but not because of anime, manga, and video games, no. Actually, if those things were to be erased from the face of the Earth I wouldn't love it any less. In my case I am in love with the locales, the history (I'm an amateur Sengoku/Warring States era nut), the food, culture, and the architecture.

No, but it looks to go that way. I thought I might be able to get a half intelligent discussion on this site, but it looks like that won't be the case.

Intelligent discussions often require an intelligent topic.

Care to explain? I'm aware this isn't some incredibly psychologically stimulating subject, but when you're on a site that has topics like "What's your favorite X game?" and "What do you think of Y tv show?" I think this is a bit more mature and thought provoking than that.

There are specific people that get on my nerves, though. Specifically people that say they love japan because "they watch alot of anime", or people who think they know everything about japan because "They watched Lucky Star and know how all Japanese act". God, I hate those types of people, and they're not hard to find either.

Um...what? If you're trying to imply that that's me, then that's not the case. If I do gain knowledge about Japan from anime I take it with a tablespoon of salt and research it if I am to do anything associated with it.

I love other cultures, makes me feel more informed about the world, and it's just like knowing maths or other things, knowledge. While you don't do stupid things (like the guy who "tried" to be a monk) it's fine.

Japanophile?

I don't think so. I mean I love the language and the food, as well as the anime and culture. I don't like Japan for any one reason. The same applies to other cultures. Things I've done most Japanophiles don't do? ...well I consider a Japanophile an anime-kid...I hate those people.

Gone to Japan - Done
Learn Japanese - Done
Experience real Japanese culture - Done
Converse with Japanese in Japanese - Done...

"My thoughts on [Group X]" isn't exactly the best way to start an intelligent, non-bias discussion. I know it's a legit discussion topic, but there are plenty of people on this site who would find it offensive, and in some cases a personal attack.
