After introducing Tails and Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the next Sonic movie is set to introduce another beloved fan favourite. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Matrix and John Wick actor Keanu Reeves will be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 after the character was teased in a post-credits scene at the end of the previous movie.

Reeves will be joining returning cast members Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Lee Majdoub, Tom Butler and Tika Sumpter, as previously confirmed by IGN. IGN also confirmed a few new cast members, including Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone.

While it's unclear who most of these new actors will be playing, Browne confirmed on Instagram she would be playing Maria Robotnik, the cousin of Carrey's character. The inclusion of Maria and Shadow, as well as the song Live & Learn, suggests the movie will take heavy inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2.

This news comes just a few days after footage from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was shown behind closed doors at CinemaCon. While the footage hasn't been released online officially yet, it allegedly shows a depressed Robotnik after the end of the previous film coming out of his funk by constructing the Ultimate Lifeform, and ends with footage of Shadow fighting Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. IGN described Shadow as looking "very much like we've seen him in the video games."

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will release December 20, 2024, bringing a close to what Sega has deemed the Year of Shadow.
