Citra 3DS emulator is also shutting down development, GitHub repo taken down

emu.png

Quietly following on the heels of the injunction ruling against Yuzu emulator that resulted in its removal and ceased development, popular Nintendo 3DS emulator Citra is following suit. Yuzu's parent company, Tropic Haze LLC, is also the owner of the development team for Citra 3DS emulator, and because of the recent ruling, Citra has also met the same fate. As of current writing, Citra has been removed from download on its official website, and the Citra GitHub repository has been taken down as well.

An official statement from Bunnei, a representative for both Citra and Yuzu, was posted on the Discord channel for Yuzu, saying that they never intended to allow piracy to impact Nintendo, and that playing games on "unauthorized hardware" is harmful, so development on both emulators will cease as of today. Citra's Discord server has also locked itself down, following the announcement.

And get fucked by Nintendo too? I highly doubt anyone with a brain would do it. One way or another they will have to start over with a different name (not sure if "Yuzu" and "Citra" are trademarked) and codebase.
I feel Citra at least is less of a target though, since the lawsuit was focused on Yuzu. Citra shutting down was more so an added bonus for Nintendo since they could kill 2 bird with one stone. Hence why I think an actively developed Citra fork is more likely than an actively developed Yuzu fork

Were talking about a $65bn company VS a small team of devs, it's not caving it's them not wanting to spend the rest of their life in prison over emulation.
I am aware and that’s part of what I am talking about. Nintendo’s case had no legal ground to stand on, what they wanted was use the court systems and fear of jail to shut them down. Nintendo knew they weren’t going to fight and they abused that. Moral of the story, Nintendo showed everyone that they can do whatever they want regardless of of the law

I disagree they created said device and people are pushing it on other devices without permission. I love emulation but at the end of the day you could get screwed by Walmart for printing their logos on their shirts and pretending to operate part of the company under a different building. Even if you altered the logo or created it from scratch. If resemblance is there it could be infringement. Might not be the best comparison. But they still have a legal right to induce lawsuit if they feel plagerised.

*puts on tinfoil hat*

So Nintendo went after them for the 3ds emulator because the switch 2 will have "nintendo online" 3ds games. Which means...*puts on another layer of tinfoil* the switch 2 will have dual screens! or has 3d! OR BOTH!

Nah, but i will only buy used and never new. Used only from now on, so they don't see any of my money. And never digital.

since there wasn't really a ruling so much as a mutual agreement, and the agreement is only between them and nintendo, a fork should be fine as long as the monetary aspect is removed. And if you're okay with being anonymous, you should also be fairly golden. Wonder how many developers would want to put in that time and energy into it though...

I can see Ninty doing 3DS VC/Online for Switch 2 as well, but I think it will be more turn the Switch 2 vertically rather than 2 separate displays.
As for the next Switch, same here I'm going 2nd hand next gen if at all. This whole situation has left a bad taste in my mouth for Nintendo..

Nintendo was smart, who cares even if they wouldn't have won in court they scared everyone off and got a settlement out of it.

It pays to sue, I guess.
Nope, Nintendo sat down with them and gave them a projection of the costs that it'll take them to continue "winning", nintendo couldn't just take a free win, they were ready to spend dozens of millions just to make them pay more than that settlement.

That’s not why Nintendo sued them though. They sued them for using files that the user needed to dump, which isn’t illegal. The rest of the lawsuit was basically Nintendo shouldering them with the blame for piracy. But it really doesn’t matter what was in the lawsuit because all Nintendo wanted was to shutdown this emulator because it was popular.

They could always pick at reason and add it in its what corps do until they're right any of them.

Nintendo could have just sent a picture of dickbutt and stalled out the courts with the Chebaka Defense, the goal really was just about making the Yuzu team lose money.

@BigOnYa, I think that listening to the same 15 songs on the music player in my dad's car all the time made me kind of hate "normal" music.
