I just keep an empty DVD-R in the drive and all games with the disc check works just fine. The drive just have to feel something inside of him and it's happy with that.

Cheers to you, sir! I couldn't figure out how to load the menu, even though I'd done it before. This is why, and now I can access the menu again! Also, I haven't tested it, but I bet I wouldn't have been able to play MP3 (outside of my standalone MP3 game) either.
