I know there are a few different versions: the SNES original, the PS1 port, and the GBA port. I wanted to know which one gives the best experience and most accurate translation.

I know there are a few hacks as well that attempt this, like Retranslation.

I'm not interested in the mobile version or pixel remaster, though opinions on them are welcome.

If you've never played the game I suggest starting with the GBA version, because of the extra additions and the dialog portraits (it can seem silly but these add a ton of immersion for me). There's probably a hack out there to replace the inferior GBA tunes with the SNES tunes for an optimal experience ?

Then, if you wanna play it again, try Final Fantasy VI Divergent Paths, a hack which adds lots of interesting stuff and offers an alternative scenario while staying faithful to the original.

The GBA Port also has a romhack that restores the original color pallete

Don't suggest the GBA version for one important reason: the GBA music sucks.

Play the remaster. The original is super buggy. After the remaster, play some of the phenomenal romhacks

I don't mind the GBA music even if the SNES is of course superior. Don't police my opinions. OP specifically said no pixel remaster.

Here's the hack that replaces the GBA tunes with the SNES ones : https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/657/

So to sum things up, I suggest playing the GBA version with these patches applied :
color restoration : https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/765/
SNES music restoration : https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/657/

That should be the definitive FF VI experience excluding the pixel remaster.

some optional uncesoring patches, if you care about that sort of things :

Pixel remaster has one tiny flaw that irritates me worth mentioning: for some reason when you load your save, there is like 5-10 seconds of load time. I don't understand it but it still is the definitive way to play. Especially with the most recent update including the snes soundtrack.

Wow, thank you for doing all that work! I just may go with the GBA version.

Yeah I think they should have focused on 1440P and let the TVs handle upscale duty
