So my Wii's disk drive refused to take disks so I decided to rip my games on an 128GB microSD Card to SD Adapter. The card works great, I personally know someone who went that route and the games load great. Anyways, the SD card seems to work fine. Games rip to the SD card great. Launching the games, however, would boot to the safety screen (make sure no objects are around, make sure your wrist strap is on, etc.) Then...black screen. I would wait for 2-3 minutes before turning the Wii off. I tried to do different stuff, going into the game's settings and use the Custom IOS, still nothing. Don't worry, I'm ahead of you on the SysCheck thing. Here it is:

P.S: Tried using WiiFlow as well, every time it would go back to the Wii Menu

recommend ==> do you use "wii backup manager" to manage your games and place them on your SD with this utility?

do you use the same version of your games depending on the version of your wii?

Is it just one game or several?

I rip the games right to my Wii via disk, with USB Loader GX. I have to open up the system itself and pull back a plastic mechanism for it to lock and spin.

I'm not sure how to do that.

Just got around to testing them. List of games:

Ghost Squad - Boots up fine.

Attack Of The Movies 3D - Boots up fine.

House of the Dead 2&3 - Boots up fine.

The Conduit - Boots up fine.

SMBB - Works fine

WarioWare: Smooth Moves - Seems to be the only one not working, which is weird because I ran it through an emulator on my PC and it works great on there.

are you using the PAL or NTSC version?

with wii backup manager, you can see if your game is not corrupted, by going to "tools", select SHA1HASH, then select the chosen item.

if it's green ==>ok
if it is red ==> delete and redo the Dump (original copy)

I am using the NTSC version. I'll try to reinstall it since it might be corrupted when I tried to install it on USB instead of SD. I learned the hard way it didn't work lol. I'll keep you posted.

Question: If your drive is refusing to read your physical discs, how the fuck did tou ripped your games with a broken drive?

Or am I understanding it wrong?

At this point you might as week just "rip your games with the help of another drive called Internet" if you know what I mean.

If you indeed used the drive called internet, then there's something wrong with your legally obtained games from the drive called internet.

My drive works, it just won't take the disks in. It would pull the disk in, stop, come out a bit then come back in, stop, before spitting the disk out entirely. It might have to be something with the gears. Like I said, I just open the system up and pull back on the plastic that is next to the gears and only then would it lock the disk down and make it spin.

Just forget it and rip your games from the other drive.

Make sure your SD card is a single partition, fat32 with 32k cluster size and mbr boot sector.

Yep, already done all that with the SD. All the other games work fine except that one, for some reason

So update: turns out I may have jumped the gun. Turns out it was a bad rip from when I was trying to load games from a thumb drive (kept freezing on the download when I did so, learned the hard way that thumb drives are no good). I deleted, reinstalled, and it works now. Thought it was a deeper underlying issue. I'm going to put my Wii back together, since I don't need to use the disc tray anymore. If I get any more Wii games from a store, I'll just get an external disc drive.

For those who are wondering, this is the thing I have to pull back on for the disc to lock and spin (photo for reference)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
